MTU, should I mess with it?

Should I mess with the MTU settings on NICs and switches?
In what situations does it make sense?So far in life I never bothered but thought I'll look into it when I have time.

The general answer here is, if you have to ask, you don’t need to touch it.
Basically you only need to deal with that at a point where you’re having some kind of overhead on the ethernet frames

I had to mess with it once when dealing with VPN with a Cisco ASA 5505, but other than that, never.

I had to mess with it once when dealing with VPN with a Cisco ASA 5505, but other than that, never.
PPPoE is the other common reason.

The only scenarios I've seen are:
- PPPoE / DSL
- Jumbo Frames
- VPNs
