George Floyd: Reddit co-founder quits board and asks for black replacement
Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian has resigned from the tech firm's board and urged the company to replace him with a black candidate.
The tech entrepreneur has also pledged to use future gains on his Reddit stock to "serve the black community." In a series of tweets, he said he was doing it "as a father who needs to be able to answer his black daughter when she asks: 'What did you do?'" It follows days of US protests against police brutality and racial inequality. Mr Ohanian, who is married to black tennis champion Serena Williams, said he would be donating $1m (£800,000) to Know Your Rights Camp, a non-profit started by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. -
How Bill Gates became the voodoo doll of Covid conspiracies
In 2015, an unassuming-looking Bill Gates came on stage at the TED conference in Vancouver to issue a dire warning.
"If anything kills over 10 million people over the next few decades, it is likely to be a highly infectious virus rather than war," he told the audience. His prescient words picked up some coverage at the time, including from the BBC - but largely went unheeded. But now, the video of this talk has now been viewed more than 64 million times - with many people more interested in the reasons behind that speech than the talk itself. Some accuse of him of leading a class of global elites. Others believe he is leading efforts to depopulate the world. Still more accuse him of making vaccines mandatory, or even attempting to implant microchips into people. -

Tesla battery supplier Catl says new design has one million-mile lifespan
A Chinese car battery-maker says it is ready to manufacture a product capable of powering a vehicle for 1.2 million miles (two million kilometres) across the course of a 16-year lifespan.
By contrast, most automakers only offer warranties ranging from 60,000 to 150,000 miles over a three to eight-year period on their cars' batteries. Contemporary Amperex Technology has not revealed who it intends to supply. But it was previously reported that the battery was co-developed with Tesla. The latest news was revealed in an interview Catl's chairman gave to the Bloomberg news agency. "If someone places an order, we are ready to produce," it quoted Zeng Yuqun as saying. He added that it was set, however, to cost a 10% premium over the batteries it already supplies. -

IBM abandons 'biased' facial recognition tech
Tech giant IBM is to stop offering facial recognition software for "mass surveillance or racial profiling".
The announcement comes as the US faces calls for police reform following the killing of a black man, George Floyd. In a letter to the US Congress, IBM said AI systems used in law enforcement needed testing "for bias". One campaigner said it was a "cynical" move from a firm that has been instrumental in creating technology for the police. In his letter to Congress, IBM chief executive Arvind Krishna said the "fight against racism is as urgent as ever", setting out three areas where the firm wanted to work with Congress: police reform, responsible use of technology, and broadening skills and educational opportunities. -

Reddit Ireland turns off at midnight to stop racist trolls
Reddit Ireland has taken the "difficult decision" to shut down in the early hours of the morning, to limit the racist and extremist content posted from the US during daytime hours there.
A multitude of accounts using false identities were to blame, it said. Moderators said having to check every comment on the social network's forums had pushed them to "breaking point". The page is now seeking to expand its team of moderators and add filters that can spot posts "hateful" comments. In a post on the page, which has 280,000 members, it said: "We're taking the very difficult decision today to shut down Reddit Ireland temporarily between midnight and 08:00 each day in order to stem the flow of racist/extremist content which is being posted at these times." -

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare fix causes Xbox owners more headaches
The makers of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare say they have "resolved" a problem that caused updates to the video game to be more than twice the size they should have been.
But several players who have tried to take advantage of the fix have reported being worse off as a consequence. The initial issue led some Xboxes to start downloading an 85 gigabyte file that should have been about 40GB. And some who cancelled this to try again have lost their main game file. As a consequence they have had to download the entire title from scratch, entailing a download of more than 100GB. -
