SpaceX Preparing to Build Low Earth Orbit High Speed Network

Your next ISP might be in space. Only a few years ago, as little as two, Musk's SpaceX is preparing to build a very low earth orbit satellite based ISP with latency as low as 25ms, low enough to easily handle VoIP calls. Over four thousand satellites will be needed, launching from Falcon9 rockets. This is very cool stuff.
But is even cooler is the very real possibilities that this provides for creating a nation-less ISP network that is high speed and very usable. Hughes has satellites doing much of this today, but with fewer satellites in high orbits that create high latency and low bandwidth leaving those using the service unable to do things like communicate in real time over the network - mostly only useful for email and web browsing. SpaceX's plans would be very different.
While details are yet to come, we could see Internet penetration into markets that have no access at all today - suddenly which high performance broadband speeds.

So odd question I haven't look at yet. What "space" do countries own? I recall that countries have jurisdiction/ownership of all land underneath them (IIRC to the center of the Earth) does the same hold true for space?

Depends what people fight for. But no one really owns space, otherwise things like spy satellites would be called trespass. And stuff on the moon would be a problem as it would rove from country to country.

That's a good point.

I bet you didn't know there is a UN Office for Outer Space Affairs. Specifically, the Outer Space Treaty (1966) says
*the exploration and use of outer space shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all countries and shall be the province of all mankind;
*outer space shall be free for exploration and use by all States;
*outer space is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means;
*States shall not place nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit or on celestial bodies or station them in outer space in any other manner;
*the Moon and other celestial bodies shall be used exclusively for peaceful purposes;
*astronauts shall be regarded as the envoys of mankind;
*States shall be responsible for national space activities whether carried out by governmental or non-governmental entities;
*States shall be liable for damage caused by their space objects; and
*States shall avoid harmful contamination of space and celestial bodies. -

That one was violated this year.

Only because the US and USSR had already stopped bothering to do that by that point. But 1958-1962, they were doing it a bit.

I'm sure there was an appropriately angry letter.

China is responsible for a huge percentage of debris around our planet. Were they penalized for that?

Nope. Nearly killed some people, destroyed their house.

Huge percentage? Not a chance. The US and Russia have been leaving debris for more than 50 years before China ever got started.

I was under the impression that he did not mean space debris.

China tested anti satellite missiles etc, so they caught up pretty fast. Happened to be their own satellites to test, but the debris is still there.

Yes, I am quite aware of that. but that is not nearly half of all space debris.

All satellite collisions spew huge amounts of debris. And do you think there is not some up there from US and russia anti sattelite missile tests?

That would be because it happened before you were born. The Star Wars program was a scary thing.

I vaguely remember hearing about that. This is one of those things that retracts from my studying, but I'll read up on it anyway lol
