Who is Cantore?
-
-
What amazes me is the complacency in my neighborhood now. I am the only one boarding windows. It is unreal, people still have crap in their yard. We picked everything up last night, starting cutting wood and boarding window, packed all the food and water we will need, and clothing.
We still have a bunch to do today. I am at work this morning and I am hoping to leave by noon.

Probably the most famous storm chaser there is. He is the guy that is always right in the middle of hell.

@IRJ Why the hell would you go into work, unless you have to water proof work as a part of your job?

Luckily we use replication to another site, but we recently implemented that. We did our first initial testing on Monday which had nothing to do with Matthew (it was scheduled for months). It went ok, but we ran into some issues. So I guess we have a real test now.
-
@IRJ sorry, I had my real test last night, cluster went up in "smoke" around 10PM, and worked until 3:45 to get back to a workable state.
Waiting for vendors to call me to troubleshoot hardware / price recovery options.
I personally would like to go and just perform a clean install on the working hardware we have as a standalone server, and then when this second server comes up use continuous replication to that host.
But the hardware is acting weird, so gotta troubleshoot that.

You haven't had it up to this point? What made it suddenly (OK we know how non sudden things like this can seem) important? Don't you get hit by huge storms every year?

Well, we aren't a huge company so costs was a barrier for awhile. It took us about 2 years to get where everything was duplicated offsite in another location.
In 200 years we have never had a direct hit from a hurricane. This is the reason the US government has 3 military bases and the Space Center within a few miles of each other. The gulf streams starts to pull offshore here which pushes bigger storms out to sea. Even if you look at the hurricane model now, you will see where the hurricane starts getting pushed off the coast. That is the Gulf Stream pulling it. It is very strong here.
Just to show you how powerful the Gulf Stream is here. We are known for ship wrecks. Many of the shipwrecks come from South Florida and the Keys, but have been pushed up here over time.

So you basically have a datacenter on an island which is in a region that has a major hurricane at least once a year - and you didn't have any kind of replication / redundancy until shortly?

Pretty Much. I am just a monkey, it isn't my circus.

@IRJ stay safe and take care. Good luck

We are leaving the island. At a minimum flooding is going to be an issue. Hopefully I have a house to come back to when this is all over with.

A friend who is on vacation in Jacksonville right now said he saw a motorcycle blow over last night. He's headed back north.

That wasn't from Matthew. We won't start feeling Matthew until tomorrow.
