Preparing for the storm

Ugh, that's no fun. Good luck.

Good luck! Which island?
Merritt Island in Florida. Not as bad as being in the Bahamas, but it isn't a good thing either.
-
Head for high ground and watch out for the storm surge. Stay safe.
-
Take care, and I hope everything turns out ok.
Remember you can rebuild your house, we can't rebuild you.

No such thing as high ground here. If you can get 15 feet above sea level, you found a mountain.
It is a hard decision whether you should evacuate or not. People always think those that don't evacuate are idiots but there are two advantages to staying during a storm.
- you could do repairs during the storm
- You have a better chance in saving your valuables from flooding
- When a mandatory evacuation is in place, all the looters come out because even the police are gone.
-
@IRJ I was thinking about just cutting all of Florida off of the continental US.
What is good down there? (besides you IRJ)?
The trouble with looting, is that there are just so many places to hit.... and not enough time!
-
Once the wind gets 40MPH + they close the bridges on the island. So if we decide to stay, we are stuck.

e
Just grab a large tarp and use it as a parachute, you should be able to make it across the water...
Should...
-
Yikes - just had to look,.. the A1A may get you a route out,... if you drive south. But that doesn't seem promising. Best route out is to the north...
Wonder if any of the cruise ships are ported,.. I know the NAVY puts all ships to sea for better survival... I would think they are the same.... But what do I know.

Port Canaveral is only about 8 mins from where I live. I am guessing the boats will start leaving the port today and tomorrow. It makes no sense to ride a storm out when you can run away from it.

nearly all boats act as sails in wind.. large boats more so. I have seen a number of videos of ships getting loose for their moorings and getting pushed into other ships or the dock.. and doing a lot of damage.
Open ocean, there is room to move,.. and they can turn into the wind and the sweals,.. The bow is the thickest,..
-
Good luck and stay safe!
-
@gjacobse yeah, which is why these boats should be headed out to sea to avoid damaging the docks etc.
-
I'm curious if these cruise ships (if any) would have drastically reduced pricing for the duration of the storm.
Like catch a cruise liner for 3-5 days all out at sea the entire time, they have to be out anyways, maybe make a vacation of it.
Since the businesses in the area are gonna be closed anyways..

At this point, you can out run the storm if you leave by today or at the latest tomorrow. Boats that are too big to be trailer-ed and too small to go out the open ocean are at the most risk.
A buddy of mine is convinced that he is going to ride out the storm in is house boat. Which is too small to go out to sea and too big to trailer. Me and some other people are trying to get him to think straight and not do something foolish.

How seasick you get is directly related to how tall a ship is. Just FYI

Lol. Honey let's fly to Florida while a hurricane is coming so we can save 50% on a cruise.
Yeah I don't see that happening. Plus the cruise ships can't go south they have to go pretty far north or east to escape the storm.
-
@MattSpeller I dont have that issue.

Lots of people discover it - those cruise ships are super duper tall and sway like you would not believe!
I've spent a lot of hours on the water in various boats and I don't get sick but I wouldn't go for that cruise even if it was free.

...and what deck level you're on, I would think. (determining the length of the inverted pendulum in the sway)
