@gjacobse Form factor and how quiet the chassis is are large factors. One day I'll have a rack in my home but that day will not be soon.

Oh that's a conversation we can have. If you guys were making a network closet at home how would you cool it?

I would cool it ambiently and save money on my heating bills. Nothing says "I work in IT" like a server rack in your living room.

Or a 13U rack under your desk at home. Man, I gotta remember to check out Northeast Factory Direct, bet I could pickup one for cheap.

13U is almost the perfect height for an ottoman. Just saying.

I've been thinking of building one of these but my wife would kill me. At our next house I'm going to build a data closet.

I'd rather have everything hidden but I run into complications with space available and cooling/airflow.

Dedicated AC unit. Not kidding, actually did that. Put in a half rack as well as a small wall mounted network rack. UPS, servers and storage went on the floor rack. Firewall, switches, patch panels on the wall mount one.

Room was closed off and was windowless. @art_of_shred installed a floor standing dedicated AC unit that vented directly to the outside. Worked great.

Not too concerned about cooling and airflow. The power requirements are going to be hell. Hoping to get some solar or wind alternative sources.

Built in the basement with a six foot glass window is the way to go.

My fiance is totally open to anything I want to do technology wise which is great. She used to teach research methods at penn state and did empirical data analysis so she more than understands the concepts. It's great.

I'd probably have an electrician friend come over and install a dedicated line for me. Friendship is a wonderful thing.

                                Score 1 for bachelor life.

My wife works in IT. She's helped to cable the house before.

When I said I wanted to put a drop in every room, my wife said, "Isn't that what wireless is for?"

My wife and I had a discussion yesterday about needing to carrying Ethernet cabling with us when we travel because we want to improve speed and reliability for stuff in the house and not overload the wireless like we have been.

                                Bring two APs?

Bad enough my neighbour uses her microwave and nukes my wireless 2.4ghz headphones. #firstworldproblems.

I was having an issue where my wireless AP was drowning out my 2.4ghz headset and controller... I moved it 5 feet away from those devices and it works find now.

I disabled 2.4ghz on mine for that same reason. AC is better anyway hehe
