Just got back from the department wide meet and greet. There are 16 people in my department... 8x more people then were in my last department.
Cool. Have fun?
Pretty. I met a few people formally that I haven't met previously.

There is a chatty Kathy convention in the back corner of the office today... just now, 3 of us were standing by my desk, shocked at the sheer decibel level, not to mention the total lack of pretending to work... go, go, gadget headphones!

Listening to Pearl Jam Radio on Pandora!

Oh good, now they are having "fast pitch stress ball feats of manliness" time. Looks like I'm going home... now-ish. I don't feel like getting in trouble for strangling one of them, which I am about an asshair away from doing.

WOW, Tiger Direct has 480 Sandisk Ultra II SSDs on sale for $130... damn!
Why shouldn't we use these in servers?
-
Go for it! Eight of those babies in RAID 5 would be pretty sweet.

Damnation! This would be significantly more space, at least cost for the backup storage solution I wanted to use my old HP DL380 G5 for.

Compare to 4TB WD Red in RAID 6 or RAID 10 for backup though, which is cheaper?

The DL380 G5 I have is 2.5" drives... those Reds won't fit.

No, the 1TB would though, at only $69 per drive. Going to RAID 6 you'd get 6TB at half the price. So it is performance versus capacity.

This is my fear - I'm going to buy (for myself) a server with 3.5" bays and then in a few years SSD will be so cheap I'll kick myself. Hopefully 3.5" SSD catch on (think of all that room for chips!)
edit: on 2nd thought, I bet cheap 3.5" to 2.5" adapters will be made

Scott found a solution for the 2.5" RED drives.

@Dashrender WD's Biggest Blackest SSD?

Every week I've been saying it's right around the corner, so... it's right around the corner.
In other news, Node.js seems to have launched v5... so now officially, Node.js burns through major revisions faster than we issue patch revisions. What a world we live in.
