My weirdest connection doing this was someone I met in Africa happened to be going by and we were able to connect.

Facebook isn't known for its privacy. It's also known that they mine data. So don't be surprised that stuff like that is out there.

That being said, Facebook is an awesome tool if you understand the risks of privacy. I am more careful posting to Facebook compared to other places online.

Every webservice that you aren't paying for is mining data.

And many that you are paying for 😉

And some that aren't web services.

I think this is a bit narrow... it's more likely to be correct to say, nearly all webservices are mining data.

I think that MangoLassi needs a geolocation feature now!

Yes, but Facebook is one of the most desirable mining databases

I'm not sure, I think google might have more data. The have many peoples emails (shopping, spending, leisure habits). Search history, and Video watched history.

I avoid this app because I avoid facebook.

I use other tools for communications.

These other tools can be directed to post to facebook for me if desired.

Facebook is not a social tool I prefer to use. I make use of it simply as a dumping ground for the non-important people to see a few things about me such as pictures of the kids and such without making them go to a blog or other media.

I don't usually live update FB and with my GPS off, it's fairly useless to me.
Most of my updates are retrospective.

Also, only friended people can see my updates, pictures etc but friends of friends can message me... I think that's what I've set. It's not uber secure but I think it's enough to keep things visible to only to the selected group.

I was doing a lot of offline posting this past weekend and confusing a lot of people who apparently thought that FB only worked while live and online.

Regarding pictures, this is not true. Those settings only reflect security WITHIN facebook.

Go to FB, get the URL of a image you posted. Link it here. I can guarantee I will be able to see it and I am not even logged IN to facebook.

Yep there is no security on the actual files.

Yeah, sorry I did mean from within.
The url to each item is still exposed to the outside world. Security via obscurity is not security at all.

If it's connected to the Internet, then it's not secure.
