@scottalanmiller My wife and the girls were back for 10 weeks last year and the girls were in school for 8 of those weeks Because the Japanese school year starts at the beginning of April and the first semester ends on the 3rd week of July. I went back in the middle of that for 3 weeks. This year they are only going back for ~7 weeks with the girls going to school for the entire month of June and I am staying home.

@Katie I get to travel to FL once a month to visit our home office. They have been laughing at me all winter.

Yes, I'm just north of there in St Pete. Haven't been laughing so much as feeling very blessed that I'm here and not further north. 😉
Perhaps try coming down more often.

The controller at one of my clients just bought a retirement house in central FL right before Thanksgiving. She has been down there a week a month since. Pretty easy to do with the modern workplace. This last time I sent her with a SIP phone since they are going to be rolling our a PBX soon.

That's my home town....They can laugh at you, but.....

That place is under water during a minor hurricane. Have you ever seen the storm surge signs in downtown? They have them in different places depending on the category of the hurricane. Its kind of scary. I remember going over the Howard Franklin Bridge during a tropical storm. There was water splashing on the bridge. I remember going 10mph over that bridge while the VAN was getting killed by the wind.

@Katie If you guys want to do any Tampa/Orlando/Sarasota Mango Meetups, let us know.

We can also host trainings or other IT events at our facility in Sarasota. Our training room can hold about 30 people and we have a cafeteria area for socializing.

Not completely, though I think some parts are more prone to it than others. I live on the west side of town, out of the floodplain. It can get windy and wet, that's true. A small price for never having to shovel snow.
And in a tropical storm, I wouldn't be crossing any of the bridges. (unless I had to evacuate, and in that case I should have crossed long before the storm came through.)

Thanks, Ryan! Something to keep in mind, for sure - especially for a MangoLassi meetup! As the membership grows, I'll be happy to coordinate an event in this area.

Yes I have. It isn't fun, regardless of where you are when it hits.

The last major hurricane to make landfall in Tampa/St. Pete was in 1921. Tampa/ St. Pete would be underwater if anything Cat2 or higher were to make a direct hit.

Yes I did live elsewhere, and I was underwater a few times.
The fact that it's been nearly 100 years since a direct hit in TB gave me confidence to live here as opposed to other coastal locations in the state.

When the Weather Channel makes a documentary specifically about my town, then I'll reconsider. 😉
I'm thinking about when they planned to do a "It could happen tomorrow" segment on a Cat 5 hitting NOLA, then it happened. They changed it to a Cat 3 hitting NYC, and then that happened later on.

That said, there is a certain amount of preparedness readiment I do between June and November.

The fact remains that certain areas of the US have a level of natural disaster risk no matter what.
                              California - Earthquakes
                              Middle America - Tornadoes
                              Gulf Coast/East Coast - Hurricanes

I'm willing to chance it for a milder year-round climate. It's ok if there are people who disagree.
