Solved Adding remote storage to Proxmox
-
So, I want to add a storage location to ProxMox for manual backup use, as well and anything else I want to have visible in the GUI, but not on the actual local storage.
The remote storage is on the same LAN right now, but might move to a colo.
What is the best solution? NFS?

Yes, NFS would be the way to go.
-
If you're only using it as a dumping ground for backups, probably NFS yes. If you were looking to have another proxmox host in colo I'd consider using "Proxmox Backup Server".

This requires a separate bare metal machine.
Yes Aaron, I know it can technically be a VM, but that is not the intended design

I use cifs, as I have a samba server with loads of space, just another option.

If it's a samba server - is it a 'nix box? why not use NFS - isn't NFS much better than cifs?

@Dashrender good point. I did not specify. Yes the existing storage is a CentOS 7 VM under Hyper-V. Currently only used for a specific application to send backups to via FTP.
Going to get more use out of the instance. So, yes since "Linux" that does lean towards NFS.

I use a Synology NAS with NFS for manual backups from Proxmox. Works pretty well.

@jaredbusch nfs on top of ZFS.
ZFS should be the underlying block/fs for everything whether a single hard drive, block storage like iSCSi, file storage such as NFS or CIFS. I like TrueNAS for this purpose. As you can see, I love ZFS. My problem is I also love CentOS. Need to figure out easy ways to get ZFS on CentOS. We should all write a letter to Larry asking him to open up the license. -

We run businesses not hobbies. I need things to be able to be blind swapped by a random Dell contracted support tech.
Using such a dumb ass gimmick is why I refused to even look at Proxmox for so long.
