Microsoft Search in Bing and Office 365 ProPlus

Got this email from MS today. Oh goody! MS is publicly announcing it is getting into the PUP/malware business
Getting flashbacks of Netscape v. Microsoft.
Starting with Version 2020 of Office 365 ProPlus, an extension for Microsoft Search in Bing will be installed that makes Bing the default search engine for the Google Chrome web browser. This extension will be installed with new installations of Office 365 ProPlus or when existing installations of Office 365 ProPlus are updated. If Bing is already the default search engine, the extension doesn't get installed.

Um, heard of Teams? MS has been big on the PUP/malware thing for a while now. Office 365 is an absolute "will never use" in my book for a bit now. It went from "going downhill" to full on malicious software and I'd never let a one of my own businesses consider it.

Soda Pop Crush or whatever is a Microsoft thing too.
-
Fedora Workstation does something similar with the Fedora User Agent extension for Google Chrome.
-
According to Reddit, this registry entry will disable this.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\office\16.0\common\officeupdate]
"preventbinginstall"=dword:00000001 -
Can we get some tags added to this post?

I would but I like free money from searching Bing, gives search results that work for me, and ties in to my MS account.

I find it depressing that Microsoft has to pay people to use their search engine.

Why? MS has failed so hard at a search engine that in order to try and drive up their market share they've resorted to paying people to use it.
-
Microsoft has also failed so hard at the browser stack that they're rebuilding IE with the chromium base.
It's a joke. MS should just sell themselves to google at this point.

but why does that depress you? are you a MS shareholder - so you see your stock as being valued less because of this action?

oh brother.. I have to assume you're mostly making a joke here. Sure they were shit at making browsers... but their cloud services division is making bank - Pretty sure they make google look like nothing currently - of course who knows what tomorrow will bring.

It depresses me because it's a sad thing.

I don't have any problems using Bing but I do use DuckDuckGo has my default search engine because of features like !Bang Search shortcuts.

Where is it failing? Can you show me real examples? Bing powers a hell of a lot more than plain old Bing.com web page searches.
