And when someone says "That's a GM, and tehre is an issue with them", you'd respond "It's a Chevy, not a GM",

My whole point is to call it by the label. Not something up the line. Of course GM makes it, but it's called a Chevy. Yes Lenovo owns it, but it's called a Motorola .

But it's Lenovo owning Motorola that makes Motorola hardware a known security hole. As in compliance with any security regulation is now in a known failed state. That's why I harp on this minor fact.

Allegedly. You dont think the US is doing anything?

Nothing allegedly about it, Lenovo is known to be harvesting data from their devices. @scottalanmiller verified this on a yoga2 well after they claimed the breaches to be fixed, and I verified it with a Motorola G4+.

As to the US doing anything, we know that customs is doing something to at least some devices, but not what.

Also, yes, I agree that both are bad and would result in non-compliance for things like HIPPA and PCI.

Don't downplay known attacks. Lenovo has been caught red handed, multiple times. There is no comparable business entity. No one else has been caught in the same way, no one. It's totally unacceptable to act like it didn't happen. Doing so is directly calling us liars (we aren't reporting news, I'm one of the people that they harvested.) If you intend to do so, be up front and just say you think I'm a liar, don't pretend that it is alleged. If you personally like Lenovo enough that you are willing to overlook their actions, that's fine, but that's different than something being alleged - that's a lack of concern over the type of event as it pertains to you.

Yeah literally any website used on a Lenovo product had everything harvested, bank account - harvested, health information - harvested - porn habits - harvested.

                Nothing was excluded.

I was just curious how he knows what was harvested. Did he capture packets being sent to them, was it all data? I'd like to see the results he's has showing all of his data was going there.

Fucking seriously? FFS, this is publicly known information.
It was bad that Lenovo did it. It was worse that they covered it up.
Lenovo has lied and covered it up and repeatedly done this.

Are you kidding? They took over the network connection. All of it, all traffic was controlled by them.

This is SO common knowledge. What world are you living in? You can't be in IT and not be aware of who the malicious players are and what happens in the industry. This is literally the biggest data breach / hacking scenario in the history of IT. There is nothing that has ever compared to it, no other vendor or agent or government has ever been caught on this scale. Everything else has been speculation, but Lenovo was caught as both the malicious actor and the distributor of the hacks repeatedly.

It's a shim, a man in the middle attack. They could chose what to send after the fact, after they had already gotten access to anything on the network.

So you ARE saying that I'm lying. Just to be clear.

It's like having had your bank broken into, the crooks already cracked the safe, the cops show up and tell the bank owners to "stop being crazy, those guys that just broke into the safe are innocent" and leaving.

Tin foil hat doesn't really apply to a situation like this. Tin foil hat is a conspiracy reference. If you know what a conspiracy is, you'd be clear that it's not a reference that ever applies to either 1) a single entity or 2) a normal self serving business process.

Example... a shop lifter taking candy from a corner store. Under no circumstances, can it happening or someone fearing that it happened or might happen be connected to a conspiracy. Conspiring is the act of people acting together. Something, obviously, a lone actor cannot do.

Because that is what it is. Period. End of story. Injecting a man in the middle attack to hijack data (and yes, it breaks web sites because they are modifying it, too) is data theft, regardless of if they have yet shipped it off or not. It's a crime, it is theft. This is black and white, no possible excuse territory.

Pretending that breaking into someone's encrypted data isn't a crime or theft is ridiculous. Calling something a conspiracy to try to downplay data theft is incredible.

If you think that criminal activity, theft (and there was other theft beyond this, and there were people paid to do what you were doing on other communities to post things to downplay physical theft and other scams), hijacked functionality are "trivial" matters, that's fine. But this is victim shaming and is not okay. It's not ethically okay, and it is certainly not okay in this community.
