From the accounting departments I've supported a list of requirements have always been - supports multiple users, and then the standard list of accounting features a business requires, GL, balance sheet, reco etc.

I feel like this conversation happens every 6 months or so...
Wave not being able to print checks is a deal breaker for a lot of people.

Right, and that's a standard accounting feature.
GnuCash can do this, but doesn't support concurrent usage. So it's often removed as an option.

Xero does all of that for sure. As does Sage. Wave does most, might lack something in there, it's definitely lean but functional for many businesses.

But never one that people list as a requirement until later. Not a requirement for us, though.

Not these days. Easily half of all SMBs don't do that anymore. If you deal with retail, hospitality or similar, they have a tendency to use accounting systems that don't do this and would never think of wanting it.

Many POS systems have built in accounting now, too. So Square, as an example, is a major one that you don't think of in other spaces.

That would depend on the department, my current accounting department would probably say yes.

I would agree that QB online is not as robust as the desktop version, and depending on your tranctional load, the Online version can have some issues.
Xero is a good alternative to evaluate.
Also, https://xtuple.com/ has both a local and cloud hosted options. Also, they have a free version too. It is more in a class with Sage, which is good as well, but can get pricey. However, these two can scale better.

If this is a very "small" business, QB, Wave, Xero, Freshbooks could be evaluated.

Intuit themselves state this. It's a new product with only a subset of features.

Been using Xero for a while. No issues. It works better than QB Online. I tried it.
