My daughter is trying to get and install mods for Minecraft on Windows 10. I've not use MC much so don't have any insight into this process. We downloaded a mod, but it isn't clear what to do with it to install it. Any guidance would be great.
There are a few mods that help make this process easier... Look at um... LightForge... That's one of them. It had good instructions for installing it IIRC.
You need a mod in order to install a mod? Man, this stuff is so bad it's like MS made it
Don't NEED one... but I find it helpful.

That does seem like a lot of work.

And apparently the Windows 10 version (opposed to the normal windows desktop version) cannot be modded.

Yeah, that's a different game altogether, related to the iPad version.
I think they made it to punish people who were foolish enough to ever use the Windows Store. Like someone snuck it in to teach people a lesson.

I don't even know if my MC server is even running still. I haven't touched my VPS for like two months.
As far as game mods go, last I knew you stuck them in a folder.

Yeah, one of my friends son's who is Autistic loves to MineCraft and he can only mod the version that is an application instead of the Store App. He uses Optifine

I have use the MineCraft Forge to then be able to install mods

I'm going to speak of the XBox, but the software may work for Windows too. You'll have to look.
I don't recall all the steps because my 10 yo son does it now. But we use Horizon to mod MC on our XBOX consoles. It took us about 15 minutes to get the first mod going. The instructions were easy if you have an understanding of how xbox games store their data. Once we were onboard with that, it was another 5 minutes to get the mod going. You basically move your profile to a usb, load it in Horizon, add the mod, re-hash your profile, save to usb, move back to xbox console.
I wish I could give you something closer to what you are looking for, but maybe this will set you on a road to get you there.

My son wanted to set up an MC server with mods yesterday evening. The process seems so convoluted. Trying Pterodactyl as of late last night but have to finish the install.

Setting up a server and using mods and the client are two totally different things
-
@JaredBusch Yes, we were going to try to use the Pterodactyl panel to manage a server.

I manage my Minecraft server with SaltStack. Super nice, convenient, and efficient.

That has nothing to do with the point of this thread. Make a new thread if you want to discuss that.
