No, he said Virtual Monitor Software. It has to be some kind of virtual monitoring of software. So not real monitoring. Or was it a virtual software monitor. Or maybe it has to do with the virtual monitor part. A virtual monitor has to be like something like a monitor you can't see but only imagine. Like you can virtually see it, but not really.

Are we talking Multiple "PC/DEVICE" inputs into a single Monitor?
e.g.

@gjacobse Are you talking about hardware emulation or just that you want to be able to split up the screen and put different applications in each sub-screen?
The latter has been around for ages. Matrox and others had applications for Windows that could do that and you could do it under linux with x.org as well.
Typically for dual monitor under linux way back, you would use a dual head nvidia card with it's proprietary drivers so both monitors appeared as one from the point of the OS. Everything worked great except that if you maximized a window it would maximize over both monitors. So you would split the screen in x windows.

I've used DisplayFusion in the past for managing multiple monitors. I just checked and it does have the ability to split a monitor into virtual monitors --

Under linux it was using the fake xinerama extention where you could define one screen into several. It was the inverse of xinerama - which was used to put multiple physical monitors into one.
I think it is can both be done in randr now. Been a long time since I've done this (decades) so I'm not sure anymore.

ETA: Virtual Monitor - as in split a single Display Monitor into two or more virtual monitors.
Does on of these two scenarios fit your goal?
- Split the screen into multiple desktops and each space would have its own taskbar and running apps that would be trapped in that space?
or
- The screen would be split into multiple spaces in such a way that if you went into Windows Display settings Windows would present you with what it believes are multiple physical monitors?
DisplayFusion does #1. I would love to see a driver that does #2
