It's America's first boom town, has loads of speakeasies and cocktail bars (one of the densest in the nation), has loads of museums and historical sites, decent food options if you aren't there for too long, the river, the breweries, and a giant water front.
And... it's actually a upstate NY city that isn't dying. Between it and Buffalo they are actually seeing some population gains.
So, are people moving away from NYC to upstate? I had a couple of opportunities to work in upstate NY while looking for a job, and the tax situation in the state meant that no employer was offering what I'd consider a reasonable rate after figuring in the living expenses, I was better off working at McDonalds in northeastern Ohio.

It was dying for many years, though. It's more of just recovering from the vacuum that got created when Kodak collapsed and Xerox left.

Correct, Upstate NY has a constant flow of people out of the state looking for better opportunities in lower tax areas. It's a beautiful region with great resources and towns and people, and cost of living is low, but the taxes are extreme and it makes doing business up there impractical.
NTG started there and moved out for exactly that reason. Had they had Texas style taxes, we'd never have left.

I was wondering about that as well. I'll probably be bringing the girlfriend unit if I'm able to attend.
We hadn't really thought about this yet, because let's face it, nobody's main squeeze was interested in going to Rochester, NY
Not really sure they would have ANY interest in going, even it was in an exotic location. Because then they would want to be out on the beach and not in some IT thing.
I know at least one spouse came to Rochester during MangoCon and did touristy things while the IT talks were happening. Can't remember who it was off the top of my head right now.
I don't know if Houston would be more attractive for doing the touristy stuff or not. 2019 will be the first time I'll have been in Houston other than waving while I drive by in a truck.
It was me! Brought he kiddos too. They had a good time in. Rochester.

Something that might be of use is using PowerShell to manage a small environment that doesn't use AD.

I suppose. That's something I wonder myself. I suppose one solution can be to configure an administrator account on all machines with the same password and use that.
I've only heard of such management happening in a non-AD environment. If someone actually does it and makes it work, I'd be curious to see how.
