For portable use cases often a live-usb is sufficient, no need for additional "tools". Is your intention for remote cases where you can plug in and just perform a wipe or ntpassword reset?

yes,.. on occasion I have needed the NTpassword reset... rarely would I need to wipe a drive.. but - it's nice to have when needed.

Wouldn't a live-usb be better than having the individual tools then?

Well - that's the thing about the Hirens - it was a toolbox. network, browser, ntpassword, teamviewer, etc... all in one 'system'..

How about UBCD? It seems to check all the boxes.

It has been a fair while since I have needed anything more than Parted Magic, but I've seen Gandalf's Win PE as well recommended

Hirens has a new version updated June 2018, just used it to fix an MBR issue:

You want this! http://www.easy2boot.com/ and load as many different ISO as you can fit on the USB stick.

The tools in Hiren works the same as they are before even though a bit dated.

There is also Gandalf's boot disk.

Parted Magic has a paid for option now? Has this always been a thing that I've just completely missed?

Newer versions have cost $ for at least 5 years now
