I am going to start an ISP

That's an ambitious task, I like it and I want you to go kick this thing's ass.

What hardware would you need to begin as an ISP, do you have the planned out?
@nerdydad said in I am going to start an ISP:
ALL of it.
Ubiquiti R5AC-Prism airMax and Ubiquiti AM-5G20-90 5GHz AirMax Sector Antenna for broadcasting from the tower
Ubiquiti LBE-5AC-Gen2-US for CPE
Ubiquiti EP-R8 EDGEPOINT ROUTER on the tower connecting to the Transceivers by 1Gb copper (thats all that the transceivers will take) and SFP down to the office.
Ubiquiti ERPRO-8 Advanced Network RoutersVultr will host the uCRM, UNMS, FreePBX (internally to company only), and email (again, internal to company only).
Why the Ubiquiti ERPRO-8 Advanced Network Routers rather than the EdgeRouter Infinity?
I'd guess price, and point to multipoint wireless isn't going to be needing 10gbps.
But for backbone and growth capabilities I think it would be worth it.
If he's servicing say 100 people the Pro would quickly begin to struggle.

When @NerdyDad actually needs a backbone, yes. He's just starting out, so he really doesn't need anything like that at this point.

Not to parrot @scottalanmiller but why would he buy something for a future that may never happen?
-
I would guess you have an opportunity to mount on a building or tower for free since leasing space from a tower owner and engineers/permit fees haven't been brought up?
Will be interested to see how you fair with UBNT.
What city/zip/are is this in?

Looks like the Infinity is still under some more development before it is ready for prime time.

Nobody has them yet, looks like the price point is at about $1500, and this thing is a little bit overkill for the moment.

I don't mean that as a dig at this idea. I meant it more that it would probably be less expensive to get a stable switch now then it would to get a 1st gen. By the time you need the power of the Infinity they will probably be cheaper or at least have a different model out.

I would need as close as I can get to the barrier highway and there are no towers close enough. Therefore, I'm going to need to drop about $50k just to get a tower site up just to get started and installing customers.

Hopefully more developed as well.

Have you actually gone to an engineering firm? IIRC towers of the necessary size can be significantly more expensive. Have you talked to any local businesses with a tall building about putting equipment on their roof? Leasing space may be cheaper then putting up your own tower.

Might be able to talk to the local school district as their new high school is tall enough and close enough to be worth while.

So a negative $50K just to start seems like a horrible investment strategy. . .
-
And I mean that in the most practical sense. That's 50K just to lease and assemble a tower. Assuming there are no other costs at all.
Before you even have customers you could easily be out 6 figures.

It's probably going to be much more then $50K after you consider legal fees, land rights, and engineered plans.

Where will you get your WISP's internet feed from?

Oh I agree I was using his number, which I though was conservative.

I've been looking at that as well. To start off with a building, tower, equip, vehicles, CPE equip, salaries, insurance, etc, I'd be looking at about $250k+.

Spectrum services the area, just not a reasonable enough area. . .

They'd be an easy competitor as they are offering <1MB download speed services for $50/month in the area.
