@DustinB3403 Why are you calling it a "hub"?

Because there is no switching taking place. The devices simply ask for a dhcp address, and go. All switches are hubs, so a basic unmanaged switch.

There is always switching taking place on a switch. All switches operate on layer 2. Hubs have no switching and operate at layer 1, so they are two different things.

OK seems like there is some confusion here.

Hubs simply rebroadcast something that comes in on a port onto every other port on the hub

A switch typically operators at Layer 2 - it knows what devices are on each port and only sends traffic to the port that is responsible for the device in question.

But a switch can also have router functions built it, often called a layer 3 switch. These switches have some smarts, enough to route traffic between two or more networks.

I suppose if someone was only ever introduced to the layer 3 style switches, they might assume all switches work this way, and they knew Hubs didn't so...

Probably wants a switch, but is calling it a hub, not realizing that a hub is a specific thing that sends all traffic out all ports (layer 1).

In this case, either would probably work, but hubs are limited to 10/100, so if you want Gbit, you'd be hosed 😛

THat acutally makes it a multi-port router.

Why would you want a hub over a switch?

I may have something - albeit used and old... but I can look.

                              You're missing it.

I need a switch to act as a basic hub. It's doing nothing but passing network to a few other devices.

I suppose you could set a switch to broadcast everything to every port. Why would you ever want this, though? What's the goal?
