take a look at turning off MS Security Essentials.

You can also run MSCONFIG and disable dang near everything for the time being

Well that changes everything - fix it by installing Korora.

Yeah, why would you even want Windows on it?

Meh, put Linux on and get that to connect.

This is a yes and no thing for me.

XP is pretty darned old at this point. It was replaced by Vista in late 2006, meaning even consumers mostly stopped seeing it on new devices by late 2007.

While it's true I had XP machines up to the point MS killed support in 2014, we really shouldn't be seeing that much more of it these days.

All this basically means - I don't think it's worth any effort to learn to fix XP. If it was Windows 7, sure fix it, it still has MS life for another 2.5 years, plus some consumers will probably be on it another 5 after that. And while sure there are some similarities to XP, Win 7 is different enough to make the effort really not valuable.

Format it, install some Linux flavor and move on. The new knowledge will significantly improve your value.

Investing in technical knowledge that is well past its prime doesn't make a lot of sense though. Literally the answer to running into XP in the wild is update it to Windows 10 or a Linux distribution if that is viable.
