Is that what my future is going to be? I'm going to acquire all of this knowledge and then resent people who ask me for it? It's like sitting on a tower of gold but never spending any of it and then you die. What's the point?

It's just changing "options", not the code. To change the command itself would be forking it and making it a new command totally and each distro would have to maintain their own codebase for forever - instead of just selecting a setting.
