Sorry doing too many things at once. Yes I know. Debating the Social Media and Posting results for having our own server on this.

The entire thing is open to all and people will simply follow as they do on twtter, it is not like your own server will have less access to an audience than any other server

I vote for running a server
-
-
Things that I have to consider:
Too many places for things to go = waste of time for me.
Too many places for people to discuss things = waste of traffic for me
A place that is likely to remain only ML people for the foreseeable future = who cares you have ML to post in your aren't going to repost threads for someone else to look at when they are already here to look at them.More possible traffic to ML is good I won't deny that at all but is the ROI worth it is the question.

As my company does, I'm going to leave it to the magic 8 ball. I'll let you know what my vote is in a minute.

The magic 8 ball said "no".

And yes I do know that it is open for people to join and use. However who is going to actually join and use a server specifically for an online community.
A failing I see here is TOO many servers and what is the real possibility of something other than another time suck for no real return.

That's the big thing. Just a way to offload the traffic from something marginally valuable to something more costly and not valuable. No benefit to the community, in fact quite a bit of negative - sending people to different places for a single thing. And it isn't like the two could be reasonably tied together, so anyone could make an account and pretend to be someone else, for example.

Think about how twitter is used, and apply that here. Because that is what Mastodon is doing right now, competing with Twitter.
Twitter does not contain "content." Instead it typically links to content, along with an opinion about said content.
And remember, only the address of the person is likely to remain ML only people. The social network itself is still a full and open social network where people can follow whomever they want. They just need the other party's address.
Those are simply longer thing than twitter.

No, you are not trying to offload the traffic.
That is the point you all are confused about. It is not a community or blog or place with content. It is twitter. See my previous post.

@scottalanmiller it is not even a replacement for Telegram. it is not semi private or private chat rooms. it is a public social network for short messages.
-
Obviously the chicken and egg question comes in from a marketing point of view.
Who will see anything I toot out? But Twitter had the same stigma until it hit some critical mass of popularity.

That is what it is called. I assume because a Mastodon has a trunk.

Better information on the project is on the wiki page.

Very true. So far, not sure how to even find toots on a Mastodon system if I'm not signed onto one. Anyone seen a public stream anywhere?

Right, it would be more like giving everyone their own dedicated MangoLassi Twitter accounts individually. I mean, that's not a bad thing and it IS interesting. We could have a large "Twitter-like" platform for IT pros to toot about IT stuff. I could see value there, but seems unlikely to work out well. If we had enough people producing enough toots, yeah, it could be cool. But it would take a LOT to make it really work.
