Damn thats more impressive than what i have in production at work now

Well, most of it is equipment so old I wouldn't put in a production environment anymore. Still, great home/play setup.

Errr what does too old even mean? We have G2 HP Servers still chugging along here.

Chugging along and "worth the electric" are different things 🙂

Don't these larger home labs send the electricity bill through the roof?

@Tim_G Nah. I have a Dell PowerEdge R510 running 24/7 and I barely noticed an increase honestly. That's with a half rack with switches, ERX, UPS, etc.

I'd notice the difference in running an extra 500w load constantly. If you've got a half-rack, a 500w load would be really low.

@Tim_G I thought the same thing, but I didn't notice any increase at all. However, I only have a Dell PE R710, and some networking gear. With the R710, I have more than I will ever need for a physical home lab. The rest of my lab is "in the cloud".

@MilkySibb The home lab has changed quite a bit since I posted this. I've replaced the 2 x R710s + MD1000 with 2 x R510 each with 12 x 6TB drives. Primary use is as a single VM fileserver. Two other Hyper-V hosts are now a R420 and R620 all running SSDs.

@Tim_G According to my UPSs, I'm running my lab on about 1.2kw and yeah, I definitely notice the increase in power bill. It's costing me about $125 per month based on loca rates, delivery charges and taxes in.

Is that $125 extra or $125 total? If total, how much extra does it add for you with your setup?

It's $125 extra per month. Just for the networking and server gear.

Wow... your setup is something I'd love to have at home. But there's no way I could justify that cost per month, if you know what I mean.

I know what you mean. The only reason I have this is because most is tax deductible through my business otherwise i would find a way to do without it all.

I finally got my hacking lab setup. I have 3 180 day trials (Windows 10, one Windows 8.1, and Server 2016) running so it will get a littler smaller soon, but I am loving it right now.

My "Home Lab" right now is a Vultr account. Really is cheaper than paying for the power, and I don't want to listen to something else when it gets hot in my tiny efficiency apartment. My desktop at home was custom built with an eye to keeping it quiet, even during the summer. (Lots of large fans and a temperature based fan controller.)

What do you end of spending a month?

                                      Again, just getting started:

Plan on installing NethServer onto the CentOS server, along with creating a Kali Linux box, an Ubuntu desktop box, and a FreePBX box. Also downloaded Wazo. I'll go and explore that one later.

Used to be $5-$10 a month, depending if I was running 1 or 2 instances. Couldn't even match the power bill at that rate for a server box.

Interesting. So I should just spend the money? I have been trying about getting this:

                                          https://www.wholesaleinternet.net/cart/?id=281

CentOS 7 and KVM I should be able to do quite a bit 🙂

                                          It's $360 a year. Worth it?

                                            At $1/day, that's very tempting.

Do you have any experience with Whole Sale Internet?
