Remote office - Basic Wireless Needs
-
So @art_of_shred just posted it, and I actually just got out a meeting discussing Wireless.
We have a remote office, that has two basic AP's providing wireless. Specifcially Cisco WAP4410N Wireless-N with POE.
These units are ancient, and we're looking for some recommendations on Ubiquti AP's. (We're not the client that @art_of_shred is talking about)

I'm pretty sure these are the ones that will run on standard POE voltage and don't require the proprietary POE switch (or injectors).

Yep, they are able to run off of 802.3af.

I've run with these and they are excellent. Definitely the way to go.

Is a controller or anything needed to get this working?

Doesn't the Unifi controller software manage the APs ?

That is what I'm asking, do I need to setup a controller or use the controller software? Or do this just act as dump AP's without any configuration?
-
Yes you will need the Controller Software, which runs on Linux or Windows. I have mine currently running in a LInux VM which I don't always have running.
-
Just happened to think - Heck, if you really wanted to, I'm sure you could run the controller from a USB install of Linux....

So the control software (or controller) have to be setup and running to configure the AP's. And only when you want to make changes you power on the controller?

Yes. I would have to look, and I am only running two APs, but I think it's been 4 months since I last ran it.
Now if you want more details,.. history, stats, etc... then you would want to run it 24/7

@gjacobse How difficult was the setup of the controller software?

it isn't
It's JAVA based... you run the installer to 'added the needed components' and then it's a web page.

If you wanted to,.. You could even run the controller on a Raspberry Pi......
-
I wish I had one of these units to play with...
-
They are enterprise APs so you'll want to have that software running almost all the time. Especially if you want to do things with 802.1x or RADIUS. It's a crazy lightweight Ubuntu (I've installed it on SUSE as well) server.

An older model but it has the same firmware and controller as the UAP-AC-Pros.
-
@coliver Bought, worst case I'll use it myself.
Thanks for the find.

That's the one I use as well. Very easy to setup and very good hardware.

Not at all.
I have these running in multiple places now, and have the controller on a DigitalOcean VM.
They work great.
