What does everyone use for centralized photo management of their personal photos? I've been thinking of utilizing Nextcloud for this, since I have a VM at home with Nextcloud, but I'm looking for a bit more "photo related" functionality that Nextcloud provides out of the box. (editing, etc) Maybe there is something I haven't found yet.

      Requirements:

      • Central repository of photos from multiple devices (phones, DLSR, etc)
      • Basic or even a little more advanced photo editing/touchup
      • Tagging
      • Free or small monthly fee.
      • If storing in the cloud, must have an easy way to do my own full library backup.

      Bonus

      • Ability to upload from IOS devices automatically
      • Facial Recognition is a bonus

      *** Must be wife friendly***

Doesn't Apple's photo service do almost all of this besides the editing?

You have a few different things that you want from a platform, which at its essence is a data repository.

          • Photo editing
          • Tagging (for facebook I assume)

These two items alone are not at all related in terms of a feature set. I'm curious if Facebook doesn't already have a solution for just this need.

Our family repository before was Apple Aperture. But I've been trying to find an alternative ever since they stopped developing that app. They had everything except for the centralized repository that is cloud based. We just used one computer as the "central repository" for our photos.

Tagging - did you mean something related to Facebook as Dustin suggested, or do you mean a way to add metadata to make searches easier?

                  Agreed.

If you want the full sized original photos, then you'll need to pay for storage above the free amount,

otherwise if you're willing to except their reduced resolution version, then it's unlimited.

Their tagging feature is awesome, and their built in logic and facial recognition is cool as all.

Right, tagging to make searches easier. Like tag with: vacation, 2016, joe shmoe, etc

Well, so far, Google photos is looking like it would fit, if I can backup the whole storage account on my own. I am really particular about having a personal copy of our family photos.

You could do that from your devices direct as well - you can have google photos on the phone backup to google, and the nextcloud client on your phone backup to your own instance of nextcloud.

Google does a ton of this for you. Google uses the Geo tagged info in most photos today, and their facial recognition is amazing, not perfect but damned good.

You can even do things like sear for trees, and it will show you all photos with trees in them, or search dog and see all the photos with dogs in them, etc.

If you don't have unlimited LTE data, make sure it backs up only on WiFi.

Google Photos JUST yesterday updated their app to include more editing features. Haven't played with it too much yet but I've used Google Photos for awhile and have been very happy.

I use both and think Google is miles better. My only concern is giving Google even more insight into my personal life.

I've not used Google for photos in a really long time. What about it do you find better now? Flickr is about the same that it was all those years ago, it was good then and is the same now, so I'm pretty happy. But if Google has something special to offer, I'm interested. It didn't have anything compelling back when I looked long ago, but it was long ago.
