Possible Linux browser hack
-
So probably not the best thread title. However, what I need to accomplish is what I view as a hack. I have two Raspberry Pi 3 units that will be serving as a "kiosk" in our library. I do not want the students to be able to get to anything other than our catalog system. I looked at a Linux OS that could do this but when I tried to install it it failed and I really didn't want to attempt it again.
The Pi's are running Canakits running Noobs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

Upvotes for Canakits! Right in my own backyard. Their stuff is pretty good.

Isn't everything Canada's backyard? Not like there is anywhere else to go from Canada...

You can set the proxy on the system to point to the catalog system and nothing else.

As you found out, you can't install just anything on a Pi as they use ARM chips instead of x86/x86_64 compatible. Like @scottalanmiller said, point the system proxy to your catalog system and nothing else.

You need an OS designed specifically for that hardware. You've left the AMD64 / PC world and so no longer can depend on "commonalities" that make PCs so easy for everyone. You are into expert "need to understand your RISC architecture" territory here. Raspberry Pis are neat, but they are not standard business tools.

@scottalanmiller I understand they are not standard business tools. I also look at it that if I can make a kiosk for $75 instead of using a machine that would have cost $200+ I look like a genius
Guess I just gotta learn some Linux commands and figure out how to get them to run if the unit is rebooted. I LOVE BEING AN IT GEEK

Yeah, it's good gear for cheap. But more learning curve.

But does that come at a cost higher than $125 to the company?

Learning is expensive and that's a really cheap way to do it.

But who normally pays for that learning? Good companies allow you to learn on the clock, bit not all projects allow for this.

And there is a difference in learning to learn and learning skills for the business.

While I get that some places would rather pay the $ to get it done right and fast. We are a school and if I can do it for a low cost and get to learn some things in the process then everyone wins in this case.
