iPhone and Text Messaging - Texts Not In Same Conversation

I have two users, husband and wife here at work, that are experiencing problems with SMS/Messaging on the iPhone. We recently moved him to an iPhone 6 and when he texts his wife, it always appears in a separate conversation and not one complete conversation. I've checked her phone and her settings are fine but he mostly works offsite and I've not checked his. Is there something I can check? I'm guessing this is an iMessages thing and an easy fix...thanks...

My wife gets this from time to time. Sometimes the message fails to send as a iMessage and instead is sent as a text. For some reason these don't combine at the other end.

My wife gets this from time to time. Sometimes the message fails to send as a iMessage and instead is sent as a text. For some reason these don't combine at the other end.
That is what I'm thinking...I did a few searches but didn't find my exact problem but I bet it is on his phone and something I need to check.

Isn't iMessage only sent over cellular data or WiFi access? Otherwise it gets sent as a generic text message, in a new conversation.
Ask him if he's on 4G.

Ask him if he's on 4G.
He often works in an area where there isn't much of a signal...and never had this problem when he was on a Windows Phone but it also didn't have iMessages to contend with...

This would make sense since his mainly works at our owners farm with poor cell signal. I assume the fix is turning off iMessages for SMS, correct?

Is the iMessage conversation showing up as one of their email addresses?

if you set iMessage to use the email, and phone on both it should all show up in the same one. If not try unchecking them an re-registering it.

I get texts and iMessages from the same person intermingled on my iPhone.
