@gjacobse did they warn you before applying the firmware update? Do they give you a way to roll back?
There was no warning that I saw or recall. I don't print everyday, and though the printer sits just inches away, I don't recall anything presenting on the display. As for rolling back, I have not considered that option, but can of course check.
Did you update it or did it update itself? Or is this simply a time bomb?
No action on my part. printer did this upon it's own accord - which I suppose you could consider a time bomb. I'll take a look at the GUI in a moment - have to address an issue.
That's where it crosses into the clearly illegal territory. Designing a device to self destruct is illegal.

HP Driver and support page shows that the current firmware was published in March 2016, so this may not be 'completely new'
Several other searches report success with downgrading the firmware, but the download isn't direct from HP.

Crazy. I hope millions of people stop buying HP forever because of this. I'll certainly never do business with them again.

@Dominica just said that they have started a new ink subscription model that is likely why they decided to vandalize peoples' printers in the hopes of extorting more money from them through the new subscription model.

As a temporary work around I have re-connected the old HP LJ3030.. which isn't networkable. However I have a very old SimpleShare NAS that can act as a print server. it's not worked right in a while with the external USB devices, but is currently. So I am able to print (the UPS shipping labels) for the now.
Sometimes it pays to keep old tech around.

Or Epson EcoTanks. The secretary here loves it, even tho it tends to get paper jams.

I always recommend Epson for inkjet and laserjet is a toss up. When I go for low cost I recommend Brother, anything else is usually HP or Canon.

Epson and Brother are good. Never been happy with Lexmark.

Maybe I won't let my wife sell my brother "printer" in the garage sale after all.
I have an hp office jet pro x451. So far it's been amazing but I haven't burned through the factory cartridges just yet.
I was planning on buying after market refills, hoping I wouldn't have an issue.

Canon used to make some with simple clear plastic ink tanks which you could refill easily and for pennies. I own one but have not used it in ages.
I only ever use a laser printer, and that's for toner transfer - probably 10 pages a year on average.

THe quote is: "HP is backtracking on a firmware update that recently blocked some printers from using third-party ink cartridges. Some users reported that the update sometimes mistakenly marked legitimate ink as fake, so HP’s CEO Jon Flaxman wrote today that the company will issue a new update to turn off the DRM.
HP also clarified that third-party cartridges still work with the original update, so long as they’re built with HP security chips — aka HP is getting a cut of their business. The first mandatory update took effect on September 13th and forced printers to display "damaged cartridge" whenever a bad third-party cartridge was loaded. Following its activation, at least one company vowed to create new chips that could subvert the security check. It looks like that won’t be needed for now."

Still a no-buy in my book now. I'll probably stop recommending all HP products, as well... just in case they start trying to mark 3rd party hard drives as bad in controller / firmware updates. At least those are less likely to happen automagically.

Yeah it is enough reason for me to not buy anything as well. However we went to Brother for printer a few years ago.

They already do this. As does Dell.

THat's what I was wondering would happen. HP did something bad, and now people are already blaming HPE - a different company.
