Disgusting waste of money:

I haven't read anything that confirms the layoffs. The articles I've seen are all rumors.
Reuters reporting what they feel is credible information from CRN who says that its source is undisclosable insiders.

20% of Cisco's employees!
You could make one hell of a company with just them alone.

Cisco has been investing in new products such as data analytics software and cloud-based tools for data centers, to offset the impact of sluggish spending by telecom carriers and enterprises on its main business of making network switches and routers.
Here's an idea. Don't make junk that's super expensive and people won't be sluggish to buy it.
Ubiquiti Mic dropped.
My CDW rep called yesterday - I grabbed the phone before looking at it. I decided to tell him that I was interested in a quote for 15 UAP-AC Pros. He went on a 10 min side track about all the brands they sell and that he had to get me a call with his engineer (i.e. other sales gorilla). I read between the lines, there's not enough margin in UBNT stuff, so I really need to move you to a more expensive brand.
I told him that I really needed a vendor partner that would listen to my requests and sell me what I ask for. If I ask for options (which I should never do with them - instead I should be paying NTG for options), then I would be willing to hear about options. He didn't seem to like that so much, but told me he would get me a quote right over. It's been 30+ hours and nothing.

Bingo
Tell him that the time wasted on the phone was enough of your value to have already purchased what you needed. Just having the phone conversation with CDW probably doubled the cost to you have the gear.
And how can they pay the rep enough as his time has to cost more than the cost of the gear that you need!

Except, it's all people that even Cisco didn't want. And I've met the people that they keep.

Well, it's been announced and it's 7%... Still going to leave a mark.
http://www.itnews.com.au/news/cisco-to-cut-about-5500-jobs-434097?Cisco Systems will cut "up to 5500" employees worldwide under a widely-tipped restructure announced today.
The cuts represent nearly seven percent of the company's workforce and come as the world's largest networking gear maker struggles with sluggish demand for its main switching and routing business.

The number announced and the number that there actually is are rarely the same. Layoffs outside of the US don't necessarily need to be disclosed, or layoff of outsourced staff, for example.

Even 7% is significant. You don't do that casually, that hits the news like a ton of bricks. Your customers see that as you having problems. Not an image anyone wants to project.

Maybe customers don't like it, but Wall Street certainly often seems to.

That's because Wall St. makes the most money from companies in flux, not those succeeding. Wall St. is about momentary gains, not long term survival. What's good for Wall St. isn't good for the company itself.
