Letchworth is truly the hidden gem of tthe NYS parks.
Can you really be a HIDDEN gem when you are the headquarters for the park system and ranked #1 state park in the nation?

We always go to the Portageville side, I believe its called the Parade Ground entrance. You are not charged on that side of the park.
Yup, that's the name. I'm rarely over there. That's the rattlesnake side of things. It lacks the crowds and the utilities. No restaurants, museums and such. But lots of good stuff there, too.

So, for the Letchworth trip, would it be advisable to bring hiking boots?

Not really. My wife and I did it in converses and sneakers a few years ago. Very easy trails with some excellent views.

I don't use boots, I just use sneakers. But hiking boots would work well.

If you don't care about the shoes getting wet, sneakers would be fine, but if you want to cross the streams or whatever and really do some "back woods" hiking you might just bring a pair of tennis shoes.

Since I'm flying Southwest, I get to check a bag free, so it would be easy to bring boots. Plus I'm not sure my current sneaks will last until I get there.

I personally would skip the boots, unless you need the support. Just bring a pair of tennis shoes, cheap and easily dried out.

So it will be "light duty" hiking then?

Most of the park is all light duty, unless we were doing a multi-day stay would I say bring boots. The park is well maintained and the trails are pretty good.
I wouldn't go much beyond tennis shoes for it, honestly. Maybe sneakers if I knew I didn't want to deal with water.

We will be sticking to the light duty areas of the park.

Gotcha. Tourist hiking!
