What the Poo and Moderation of Swearing
-
Okay, there is another thread that I'm going to request be unlocked once this one gets started. Please keep discussions about that thread to its actual topic and keep discussions about moderation practices, ideas or whatever here.
So a few things. One, @gjacobse wasn't comfortable throwing me under the bus when I was not around to defend myself or discuss so held off admitting that it was me who performed an initial, questionable moderation. As the DB manager, there is no way for me not to have mod powers. I try not to mod often, now you can see why, but this seemed innocuous and I didn't think anything of it as several people are away and mod capacity is decreased.
There were some people like @aaron @aaronstuder @JaredBusch who, I believe, felt that moderating the topic title was inappropriate or unnecessary due to the nature of it being a thread about a product. The topic was not "swearing" but was "naming a product." I'm open to that being a viable reason to not have it be renamed, but feel that a community discussion is warranted as I don't want to inject a strong opinion here. When I made the mod change it did not occur to me that it would be seen as controversial and in no way was a reflection on the OP, just about having the word show up in the feeds (unread, recent, etc.)
However, I do think that in a case like this it is important to mod first, and then discuss. We can always revert back later. But, that can be discussed, too.
From my understanding, I've not gone to look this up yet, there is no published community guideline on swearing. It is moderated often (not by me) but perhaps it is done without a clear set of rules around when, how much, in what way, etc.?
Tagging @Minion-Queen as well, who is not available at this time.

Whether or not it's "swearing" is in the eye of the fucking beholder...

@RojoLoco This is why we can't have nice things

True as that is - 'swearing' doesn't have to be used as often as it is. Trust me,.. Having worked with computer for 30 years, having been in the US Military, and around others - I can use quite a bit of profanity. However I chose not to use it in a forum setting.

For my actual contribution to the discussion:
I see no issue with it, this is hardly a forum that will be browsed avidly by children. Having said that, it would be sad to see it's use become common place as that detracts from it's.... je ne sais quoi.
For an unscientific but interesting none the less look at the topic of swearing the Mythbusters did an episode on it. Relevant especially to our discussion here is swearing's ability to relieve stress / pain. Less relevant but actually hilarious would be a quote from the Trailer Park Boys.

That is your opinion and whether or not it is mine does not matter apparently.

Frankly I was amazed at how long it wasn't moderated - at least the title.
My 2 cents - Titles should always be moderated, but the OP, if about an actual product name, should be left alone. And tags for a real product should be allowed, but only used to reference the aforementioned product(s).

Probably not, but it would be nice if they felt comfortable using it AND if parents felt comfortable with them being here. Of course, in most work environments, like in NYC for sure, you would hear far worse in the office all of the time. No question there. Although there is something different about things being in print, than when things are spoken. It's not fleeting background noise, it's on peoples' screens as managers and coworkers walk by or whatever.

Only the title ever was. Only that part shows up on other lists, like the RSS feed titles, recent list, unread list. So if we mod it there, and keep it in the topic, people know to peruse it or not at their discretion. It doesn't "pop up" when not wanted.
Like the "Anything Goes" random thread... people are warned that people will let loose there and that it is NSFW.

this is the difference between a casual conversation and a post on Twitter or FB... the print/foreverness of it.
