iDRAC8 with Vflash and 16GB SD Card for remote access (not needed but cheap)
What's this SD card for?

So here's a new slimmed down proposal I've written, with the goal of having enough storage capacity for at least the next 5 Year. (expected usage of the servers)
Two Dell R730's with 3.5" drives filled with eight 4TB drives (RAID10 for 16.3TB usable).
Do you get enough IOPs for your load with this?
-
Our IOPS aren't much at all, we mostly host file servers in house.
The only database we have is SW.

Storage on the iDRAC interface for any files etc.

Cool, I guess. what's it good for beyond putting an ISO for installing the system the main OS, in your case XS?
-
That's pretty much the use case for it (in our scenario). Loading ISO's to pass to XS to build VM's if we need them.

I suppose that could be handy - basically you can have a 16 GB ISO jukebox. nice.

The backup target is planned for a Synology NAS RS2416+ with twelve 8TB drives configured in RAID10 to run the NFS/SMB services needed for Xen Orchestra.
Providing 49TB of backup space on-site, which our backups will then get pushed out nightly to a data center.

I run Exchange 2010 with 100 users and SQL Server 2008 R2 (running Dynamics NAV) with 40 users on a box similar to this. As well as the DC's, RDS, PBX, and various Linux VMs (ownCloud, Nginx proxy, etc).
I never have IOPS issues as the 1GB of cache pretty much negates it.
-
That is one sweet setup you'll have. If you're trying to make me feel a little envious, it's working. (We don't have a need for more than a single server.)
-
@travisdh1 We really don't need more than a single server either, but I couldn't win that battle of saving close to 10K.

I am a firm believer of better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. If the bean counters want to spend that 10k, I'm certain I would oblige them also, lol.
-
@dafyre I understand the statement, but standard availability is all we really need. HA is good, but not killer.

At least you know and understand this. In a place with better business sense would likely agree with you and save that 10k to use elsewhere... But at least this way, you know your systems will be able to handle hardware issues and such, assuming you get it built right.

I am too. I say "we could have $10K or we could spend it". Sure, we can spend it now, but... what if we need it tomorrow?

I'm in @scottalanmiller's boat on this one. Why the hell spend money just to spend money? If they want to do that, I could use my wife's car paid off?
-
@scottalanmiller and @JaredBusch I'm not sure if you agree with me or not, the replies are difficult.
But as Jared said there are better things that the money could be used towards.
-
I agree you - it's a waste of $10K.
Scott's comment digested means - we can either have some money in the bank, or we can spend it. Sure, since we have money in the bank we can spend it today/now.... and if we need that $10K for something else, something more important tomorrow - Oh well, I guess we'll live without because of our shortsightedness.
