      So far so good.

      Survived two reboots, installing all Windows updates and still no Candy Crush!

      0_1459459875929_blank start menu.png

      Even better, you can see here that the Start Menu has place holders waiting for whatever random crap MS wants to download to your machine this week.

      It's odd that XBox is still there - but unlike Candy Crush, you were never able to uninstall it anyhow.

        Awesome - I've already had more luck! Of course I'm only standing here on the shoulders of those who found other problems that I fixed before proceeding. Thanks @JaredBusch

          After installing only the Windows Updates, seeing that Crandy crap wasn't installed, I did a

           sysprep /oobe /generalize /reboot

          The system remained connected to the network/internet, rebooted and went through all of the normal Windows install/post sysprep steps just fine.

          I am now on a Windows 10 desktop, the registry change has remained, but the start menu looks a little different

                    No, not really, because I'm only half serious about it.

                    though I do believe there is a file you can include in the root of the DVD/USB drive that Windows will read during install - at least I think this function was something that existed a long time ago. - that might be able to do this...

                        Because I missed adding the CloudContent key prior to adding the dword.

                        Windows updates in process no crapware yet.

                          Clean install did reg hack, nothing added, sysprep worked perfectly.

                          made image and pushed onto test desktop. worked perfectly.

                          rolled VM back to pre-sysprep and then installed Office, and a bunch of other software.

                          sysprep ran perfectly.

                          made image and pushed onto test desktop. windows failed to install correctly.

                          f[moderated] it all...

                            Can you provide a full list of installed software?

                            Did the VM boot backup after the sysprep?

                                  rechecked again rebooted.

                                  Just annoyed that it failed. I can test the image on a VM after each application, but that is annoying as f[moderated].

                                    After sysprep? yes. but that is not relevant to the install failing on a piece of hardware.

                                    Seriously no idea why you are hung up on this. it has zero bearing on anything.

                                      I am wondering if the failure was hardware or software based.. if the sysprep on the VM failed to restart "normally" then you know for sure it's software related... time to look at services or drivers that installed with the added software.

                                        my suspects would be Webroot and Screenconnect.

                                        I've installed Panda AV on my images in the past with no issues, but not LMI, of course, they are not the exactly same software.. so no telling if it's relevant.

                                          Certainly not ScreenConnect suspected unless it is something new. Reason: I had to look up how to fix it reusing it's internal machine ID after sysprep. That is a registry edit prior to sysprep (just FYI).

                                            here's another tip for decrapafying Windows 10.

                                            You can change this via GPO, you might even be able to put it in a golden image in the default user.

                                            HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ContentDeliveryManager

                                            SystemPaneSuggestionsEnabled DWORD

                                            0 = Off
                                            1 = On
