On a client's network, in the blocked website categories, I'm blocking the typical items like Abortion, Porn, Cult, Nudity, Guns, Weapons & Gambling etc.

      Firewall is a Meraki MX100.

Example: sites like espn.com get blocked because it get's categorized as gambling. No biggie since one can add said site to the URL whitelist.

Yesterday, I get a text from the Office Manager, saying "open the flood gates to the 'net. I guess it's ok for gambling, nudity & guns & whatever else"
Not sure if this an attempt at humor, as the text didn't include any smileys.

      Thoughts?

I'd dare say a face-to-face visit may be warranted in this case.

            If at all possible.

You certainly need to confirm, in a tracked medium such as email what is wanted.

That said, I never block anything on any client networks. It is a waste of resources.

Face to Face or phone call should be good enough.

But receiving an order for work via a Text Message seems odd - I'd definitely request that it be sent via an email for confirmation.

                You could start it.

Hey I received your text message yesterday about turning off web filtering. Would you please let me know when I can stop by to confirm the settings you want?

                etc.

I get this all the time. It is certainly not odd to me. But if it is a change like this with potentially severe consequences, I would always confirm via email for CYA purposes.

Seems pretty normal. We don't block anything here but Phishing and Malware.

I agree here. Get confirmation and do it by email. It sounds like he does want it open and it makes sense for it to be open most of the time.

And I agree, we never block ourselves and never recommend blocking even though it would make us money to support. Content filtering mostly just hides HR issues at best and causes workplace problems at worst. It's not effective and often has negative consequences that far outweigh its trivial value.

I agree that this feels odd, especially for the type of request.

Yeah it does.. almost like intentionally off the record..

Exactly. If it was a common channel already in use all the time and/or part of an ongoing conversation it would be one thing. But a one off like that of this topic feels strange. Better safe than sorry.
