The Verge Has Declared the Windows Phone Dead
-
This really just sucks... I don't understand why it's failed so bad? I've used Android, and it's definitely not better. Apps are the only thing I can see that they have that Windows Phone/mobile doesn't
-
Other than basic stability, apps pretty much make the platform.

yeah - but it's a chicken or the egg thing.
Apple of course had the first device in wide use with Apps.. so how did android manage to come in? I know - cheap devices.
WIndows phone has had cheap devcies, but perhaps not since the beginning?

Like anything... being too late to the game without offering any compelling advantage. Windows could not be "as good" as Android and compete, it had to be clearly better.
But for most of us who used it, it wasn't compellingly better. In fact, by and large, it was significantly worse. So why would anyone use it? If you have two better choices that are mature and own the market, why would customers buy them and why would app makers invest in it?
They didn't differentiate themselves. They just.... offered a crappy Android-lite copy.
-
yeah, sad sigh, I know.. it really probably is dead.
Now I have to decide what my next device is going to be, I mean, which Android I'm going to buy, I just can't see myself ever bowing to the Apple crazies, no matter how good the device is - I will feel emotionally crazy.

^^This, few people at work have swapped but only because apps they want to use aren't available on Windows Phones.
-
My experience with it was that the hardware was good, but not compelling. Like it was fast and attractive, but nothing really kicked butt on it. It was uncomfortable to hold and the camera was great. But those were roughly the notable features.
-
I do think it's kind of sad. I'm probably one of the only ones, but I thought WP 8 was better than 8.1. I had an HTC 8x and I remember thinking how cool and easy it was to post to facebook/twitter/linked in directly from the phone without an extra app. The notifications were in your people hub (whatever the called it before it was that in 8.1) and you could see posts from all of the services there. However they didn't have things like VPN ability and notifications were a ridiculous mess.
8.1 came and we lost the ability for the social functions, but gained crappy VPN ability and crappy notifications. Plus some weird bugs like if I opened an app more than once from the menu, I would have multiple copies of it running that I would have to close.
Plus, Microsoft created the Facebook app for 8.1 (I kind of think they did it on purpose with some kind of integration in mind like before but it never happened) and the app is garbage. Constant no service errors when you have full service and wifi, the same posts show up every time, posts from weeks ago appear at the top, etc.
They had some interesting ideas and I really really tried to like it, but were lacking in so many areas it made it not worth it.

I'm sold on the Samsung Galaxy line of products. My last phone was a Note 3. The reception sucked, but the camera was decent, and Android was fast on it! I upped to the Note 4, and have better reception, and Android is still fast (5.1.1 ATM, not rooted).
A buddy of mine is sold on the Nexus line as well.

When I started this job my Windows Phone died, and I started using a cheap Android phone, and I got a company iPhone. I had never realized how good I had it before. The other UIs are catching up to the WP8.1 in basic usability, but there are so many seemingly minor things that they do not do out of the box that is native to WP. I have since gone back to a Lumia 640 (yay for Black Friday and AT&T unlocks), but I still deal with frustrations with my iPhone every day.

Meh... I'm going through one of those phases of if it ain't broke, don't fix it. By this time next month, I may be asking around to see if anybody has got Ubuntu running on this phone yet.
I actually want to try the RemixOS, but I don't think that is for phones, lol.

Exactly. No different than trying to cram Ubuntu on here, lol.
-
And Remix OS is AMD64 only, it won't run on the ARM processors in phones.
