online file server and backup

box.com's individual file size is 5 GB and i guess with ODFB its still 2GB?

Oh, Box is unlimited storage? That is indeed a big deal.

Yes, but it costs $17/mo/user. Still i think this is a good deal, and as far as my testing goes, there are no sync issues even when handling large files. In our company we have box enterprise, and is ready to roll out to all agencies. Once its up and running all agencies will move all of their local/network storage to box and not to worry about hardware storage/renewal and maintenance!
So my question was, does it makes sense to go with box for this guy even though he will have O365. As mentioned earlier, I will let the OD be used as a public drive for each user to store whatever they want but box becomes their primary file sharing tool.

Oh, well that does offset it a bit. Also consider ownCloud, you can host your own, too. You can do 1TB on Vultr for super cheap. But 1TB is the limit.

I thought about Owncloud, but they will not be interested in an ongoing maintenance contract as of now, they are just 6 members team. So thought of setting it up for them and main management would be users/shares/permission which would be pretty easy. If they agree for a contract, I would, without thinking twice install owncloud and set it up for them

But ODfB or Box are ongoing maintenance contracts, how does ownCloud get rules out but not the others?

For box/ODFB once the account is set, they get support+access even though they pay the monthly fee and that too only based on number of users. If i need to give own cloud for them, i need to consider my time to setup and maintain this ongoing and they need to pay may be more than what they will pay for those online services. At least that's what i think. For me to keep the unlimited, managed owncloud for more than 1TB, need to find a good hosting provider, see if the cost of that+the maintenance fee for me to manage this services, i guess if they are not willing to sign a retainer contract, its not worth spending that time.

Good reasoning. You can look here for a list of ownCloud providers to make things more comparable.

Does SharePoint not provide what they need? It comes with O365

SP does not handle 1TB of data very well.

I've used egnyte in the past for situations like that, don't remember pricing or limits though
