This is an asset tracking system, not a monitoring solution.

manual assets then? i.e. you have to enter them yourself?

Yes, of course. Can't scan most assets even if you wanted to. But scanning isn't very useful as other products have shown. Causes a lot of mistakes, security concerns, end user confusion - all things that are not good when we are talking about asset tracking and reporting. This is a system to feed accounting departments.

So you got this running on CentOS7??
Might give it another go. What was the one line command you used for CentOS7 (is it the same as the one in my thread/rant lol)

*edit - IGNORE ME - just seen the install Snipe-IT Thread 🙂

My co-worker fired this up the other day...while it has some potential, it's very limited.

I noticed that if you want to import your assets, make sure you have your columns (CSV import) in the right order. With that said, even that doesn't guarantee that you will get an accurate import. I had weird values showing up under the deployment status (this was the best import out of the few that I tried).

The imported file never really lets you know when it completes, which is kind of annoying.

There is no bulk delete if you need to clean up your inventory because of a botched import. So, you need to clean them individually. one. by one. So, I would suggest that you try to perform a bulk import of one or two devices.

Also, I would get a 500 error on invalid logons - not sure if that was how my co-worker had it set up, or if that was a bug.

Honestly, Spiceworks could probably do most of what this Snipe IT is trying to achieve (especially if you are importing and managing manual assets). With that said, I'd wager that Snipe IT would be more stable 🙂 and responsive; I do like how SW allows you to create custom attributes to help manage each device, which really is the feature that I would need the most.

Needs more work, but it looks nice.

@Rob-Dunn Custom fields are on the develop branch and are slated for the next release. You're welcome to check them out on the demo as well.

It's so awesome to have Snipe themselves in the community!! Welcome!

That's a huge new feature and one that kept us from being able to consider moving to Snipe-IT in the current release. We need to be able to identify assets to a customer and that might make the difference.

So, I am setting things up. There are certainly issues..

I imported AD users via LDAP, easily enough.

Then I created locations and assigned them to the users..

Unfortunately, when you look at a user, it shows their manager and then their address. Implying that the manager is at that address. When it is not true.

The obfuscated information below my name there is the user's address not mine.

Then when you are editing a user and go to select a manager, you have to wade through a bunch of commented code /* oops!!! if the manager has an email address.

Note the obfuscated name above mine has no extra code, because no email was assigned to that user yet.

Tried to delete an imported LDAP user and it failed.

What does everyone use for asset numbers iwth tools like this? Just start at some # and go? make up a scheme? etc.

                        I'm curious.

@JaredBusch We will be using a fix number size and auto increment with a prefix in the front e.g. WYN000001 - WYN000002 - WYN000052 etc
We will most probably go out and buy the labels in bulk instead of printing in house.

Is there an import feature on this tool. IE Can you populate a CVS with what you want added, click import, and then add a bunch of new entries?

It seems like a really good platform for the wonderful cost of free.

@JaredBusch Here for our assets we use a simple scheme.

Asset Company Owner : Customer Name
Date the Asset was Received: MM-DD-YY
                              Quantity: 1a, b, c ; 2a, b,c,d etc (b,c and d are the child assets)

                              So for example:

                              Ford-120615-1a - iPad Air Pro

Which might be an iPad. With that iPad came a box and charger. So there would be two child assets 1b, and 1c.

So as an asset kit when this item gets checked out Ford-120615-1a, Ford-120615-1b and Ford-120615-1c would all be checked out to a person.

On the check out receipt it would look like.

                              Ford-120615-1a - iPad Air Pro Initials _____
                              Ford-120615-1b - iPad Box Initials _____
                              Ford-120615-1c - iPad Charger Initials _____

We used a number scheme that is just a number starting from 1000 and climbing. We ignored numbers under 1000 because they were too short and wouldn't look like asset numbers to people looking for them, we feared. Other than that, we just use a number.
