Office 365 on Linux Desktop
-
So my laptop running Windows 10 is just untenable. The desktop response time is so lagging that typing is nearly impossible. I do most of my work from a Linux Mint VM running on VirtualBox on top of Windows 10 which strangely works beautifully. I have no idea why the Windows 10 desktop is having so many performance problems when a VM on top of it is running absolutely smoothly. I've used other Windows 10 systems and no issues like this, so likely there is something wrong with the install or who knows. But the hardware that I am on is quite fast (recent quad core i7, 12GB, etc.) (To make things really smooth I am currently running XFCE rather than Cinnamon, so no desktop effects whatsoever.)
Anyway, this got me thinking that I could just move to Linux. I am trying to determine what I need to be able to make the switch to nothing but Linux (I have a secondary Windows laptop, so not a big deal.)
Most of MS Office will work in a web browser - since there are issues with Office 365 properly launching the MS Office apps, that's the only place that I use them anyway. So that is solved. Sharepoint works perfectly on Linux.
ODfB I assume will not work, but I'm three or more months without that working at this point so that's effectively lost anyway. Yammer works in a browser only, so that is solved.
Skype for Business is my top concern as there is no native client for Linux. But I found Wync and an looking into that. If that works, it might be all that I need.
Getting ODfB available on Linux would be awesome, that would make me very happy.
The other thing that is bad is that there is currently no way AFAIK to have Linux authenticate against Azure AD like Windows 10 does. That would be really nice but I'll live without that (for now.) Fingers crossed that someone gets a PAM module made for that in time.
What am I missing? If Skype for Business can work on Linux, I have a feeling that I am clear to switch over.

To be clear, I like Windows 10 and am not complaining about it. It's been far better than Mac OSX was for my year of testing that. I'm just at a point where it seems I can go 100% Mint without losing anything and just have an amazing laptop experience.

What about server admin tools for windows? RSAT.
Is your win10 install an upgrade or fresh install?

I'm not a Windows Admin so doesn't affect me.

Good question. You'd have to ask NTG Internal IT what was done...
@Mike-Ralston could tell us.

So that Lync client is $49/user/year if you want anything beyond the texting. You can test for free and are limited to two minutes. But that is really expensive. If it was $5, no brainer. But $49/year!?!

I know you can access Sharepoint via webdav. Is it possible to expose that part of ODfB to mount on a Linux system?

It is an upgrade.

@Minion-Queen ah, that might explain it. It's not healthy.

Yep, not had good luck with ANY upgrades. always did the upgrade, then a fresh install. solves all sorts of problems.

I agree. Not sure how an upgrade slipped through the system.

fire @Mike-Ralston he has failed this city.
-
LOL - yeah time to wipe it and fresh install.
Like Hub, I do the upgrade to get the license, then wipe and clean load! So far, it's been awesome!
-
Yup, not sure how that step got missed.

About your performance issues in Win 10, check your processes for misbehaving OneDrive for Business client. I've had more than one incidence with more than one user (including myself), where ODfB was running at 95% cpu or higher basically non-stop. My laptop got so hot I could barely touch it. Once I killed the process, everything cooled down and the performance recovered significantly.
Oh, also, if that happens, you may have to disconnect the library and re sync.
They need to get their shit together with this OneDrive for Business nonsense. Seriously.

I've had no working account for over three months now, so you are preaching to the choir there!
