Microsoft Leaks that Server 2016 Will Have Core Licensing
-
It has been leaked on Reddit from a Microsoft partner that Windows Server 2016 will be licensed by the core rather than by the CPU like it has been in the past. This is likely mostly good news for smaller shops where smaller CPUs and single CPUs have made Windows licensing often quite impractical. Full details have yet to be released.

Has this ever turned out to be good news for SMB?
Like when they pulled Windows Enterprise out of Software Assurance - if you wanted both of those, the price was like 20% more expensive than it was when they were combined.

It MIGHT. We will have to see how they do it. I think that it might be good, though.

The reddit link seems to think it will only affect the Datacenter versions... but I think they'll probably license them all per core...

Maybe core limits.

I'm guessing it will be soft licensing like it always has been - basically the only thing you worry about is an audit, otherwise it will work fine.. .that's not to say you should pirate anything !

Yeah I see this effecting all levels of their operating systems.
I expect them to start with businesses, and making desktop licensing free.
