@Minion-Queen Thanks for asking... Mostly for a DR type scenario. Replication of VM backups and maybe some small databases.

How Do I Find the Best Local Colo for Me?
Title pretty much sums it up. I was recently reading some threads here about colos and the pricing seems to make sense for some of my workloads. How do I find the best local colo for me?
Just in case it matters... Southwest Ventura County, CA is where I am located.

RE: What Malware Had You the Most Worried This Month?
I do really well with not getting hit with malware, here. I have Trend Micro OfficeScan 11, Barracuda SVF300 (with Cloud filter service) and Sophos UTM with IPS, IDS, etc. I also implemented application whitelisting, per a ginormous thread on SW and that lets me sleep at night.
Edit: I would also like to add that I strongly encourage users asking me if they receive a suspicious e-mail and thank them every time they do. It isn't bulletproof but when they get the gratitude from me on their security practices, they feel better about asking.

RE: Pingdom not free anymore
For a 3rd party external monitor, I am using uptime robot. They have a free version that has some limitations, i.e. scan intervals but I pay for the basic tier and it is really close to free.

RE: VPN for Domain Controllers
@scottalanmiller Thanks. I was hoping there might be a pre-configured virtual appliance.

vCenter Server 6 on Windows 2012 R2 - Backup using Veeam 8
Hello,
My first topic/question post on ML!
I just migrated everything out of the deprecated VMware VSA 5.5 cluster I had running and tore it all down and did fresh installations of ESXi 6 on 3 hosts and played musical VMs while doing one host at a time. Anyway, I also spun up a new Windows 2012 R2 VM for vCenter Server 6 and learned that the internal DB had changed from SQL Server Express to vPostgres (I knew that the server appliance used this DB), although the Update Manger DB is still SQL express. I want to make sure that I can get a good clean backup of both the vCenter Server DB and the Windows server, itself.
I have Veeam B&R 8 (fully-patched and waiting for 9) and saw this KB article on VMware's website regarding the backup of the vPostgres DB.
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2091961So I have tested the script and it runs successfully. I have a ShoreTel server that I have been using a backupscripts.d folder in the VMware tools directory that kills the ShoreTel services and whatnot just before the Veeam backup is run and then, afterward, restarts them all. This is completely separate from any settings in the Veeam "Job Scripts" section (Storage>Advanced Settings>Advanced). I have tried Googling the backupscripts.d method for vSphere 6 and can't find anything. VMware's KB article mentioning this method shows that the applicable versions up to 5.5 so I am not sure if it is just not up to date or if this method has been deprecated in version 6.
My main question is, how do I integrate this with Veeam?
Thanks!

RE: VPN for Domain Controllers
@anonymous I read that thread and I am taking away that the only way to run a controller is to use a linux box. Is this correct?
-
RE: VPN for Domain Controllers
@anonymous The website is hard to use, although it looks nice and simple. They keep mentioning the running your own controller but I have yet to find the link to download it/instructions on how to implement it. I went around in circles last week going from FAQ to Documentation and back again.

RE: VPN for Domain Controllers
@Dashrender Thanks for suggesting this. I hadn't heard of it and have been looking at Pertino for over a year. Hmmm.

RE: Consumer ISP Pricing - Where are you, how fast is it, and what do you pay?
West Ventura County, CA
Verizon FiOS
75/75
$40/month
Bundled with TV service so this is the cost as shown on the bill after $20 discounts. The discounts are good for 2 years. It was $45 for the first two years so it is a pretty good deal.Edit: I forgot to mention that I got my work to pay for it, so to me, it is free.

RE: If you are new drop in say hello and introduce yourself please!
@scottalanmiller I would say I am surprised but it all makes too much sense.

RE: If you are new drop in say hello and introduce yourself please!
@scottalanmiller Your Dad is on SW? LOL That is awesome.

RE: If you are new drop in say hello and introduce yourself please!
@scottalanmiller OH! From 2009. That's why. That is before I discovered SW.

RE: If you are new drop in say hello and introduce yourself please!
@scottalanmiller How did I miss that?! I guess it is a more widely-held belief than just mine.

RE: If you are new drop in say hello and introduce yourself please!
@scottalanmiller Thanks SAM! I ended up here as a link-through from a SpiceWorks thread, where I have been a member/user for over 5 years (and in IT for over 15).
FTR- I am almost convinced SAM has cloned himself and none of the clones sleep... EVER. There are more posts on these two forums and the smbjournal than I can ever read. But that doesn't stop me from trying!

RE: What Switches do you use?
I am looking at upgrading my infrastructure soon. Has anyone had any experience with Extreme switches?
