Bad guy steals just hard drives, no worries. Owner safe.

This is a big deal as this is how most people manage to make off with data.

You hear about HD's being stolen, but not the whole unit?

I have. 2U Rack unit They bad guys didn't have a screw driver handy. Pressed the power button, pop the drives and out the door.

Exactly, (as you and most people here know but not the general pubic it seems) is IMHO synonymous with the word indictment.

Can you try again and make a coherent sentence? Because this makes no sense

Exactly, is IMHO synonymous with the word indictment.

My apologies. Had multiple replies going on....

IMHO, the word impeachment is synonymous with the word indictment. Basically, just stating charges against a specific party. No trial has taken place and the accused is still innocent. Although some think impeachment/indictment = guilty.

That seems a bit more coherent.

LOL - stealing just to steal it sounds like - unless they were targeted...

Do they have a backup strategy for their pharmacy software?

Side Note - In small medical offices, when they ask how to shore up security, my statement is, "I will have a much better idea how to fill the security gap if I can see your HIPAA policies and most recent security assessment." I get some interesting reactions. Hard to be HIPAA compliant without those items. Plus, you may get extra billable hours.

Yeah. IMHO, WFH has really helped UI this year. WFH isn't everything but being Up almost 80% YoY in earnings and 50%+ in YoY sales, for a hardware company???? That is a big ball of NICE!.

Unfortunately I sold out at around $230 earlier this year (in at $60 in 2019). Although those funds were transferred into Crowdstrike so no real complaints.

@Pete-S They dropped the price to 1061.24 since I posted. lol Interesting. Yes, but that is a max of 12 nvme. I may have misunderstood that option with 8 SAS/SATA. I am guessing that the max of 12 would allow for more SAS/SATA, although it doesn't mention it. My issue was also with the available drive capacities and cost per TB for spinning disks in the 2.5" spec.

Yeah, especially direct from the OEM. Have you thought about buying the storage from xByte instead?

Are their drives brand new? I did price out a server with specs as similar to Dell's as possible and it was only off by a couple grand.

IMHO, I consider their drives are 99.9% brand new as its possible an OEM install was done on the drive or something like that. Plus testing of the drive by the OEM and xByte.

Their hardware is manufacturer refurbished, not used. Big difference.

If you can get a Dell ProSupport (w/w-out) Plus 7 year warranty on the server with the drives from xByte, it doesn't really matter if they are new or not. They are under warranty for 7 years and you have no worries.

anyone know of any print servers that can convert usb printers to ethernet?

I can only find a TP Link model down here. Think I used to use a DLink model but don't seem to make 'em any more.

There are Digi AnywhereUSB's here for USB to ethernet devices.

Unfortunately, a little on the expensive side.

Just out of interest what are most of america's different states and Canada using in regards to internet connections? Over here in the UK we are mostly FTC now, which is copper from the property to the street cabinet then fibre to the exchange. We are still limited by distance to the cabinet in regards to what speeds we get. We also still have ADSL available, but most are not using that these days. My speed for example is now 56/10. At my old address I was right next to the cabinet and would get 70/20. Just curious if you are mostly FTTP over there.

In US, Spectrum Cable Internet here 200/12 for about $60. ATT has talked about FTC in my home area for 10+ years. You can tell by my current connection how well that is going.

EDIT: In my area, ATT only has FTC installed in select areas which are new developments and upper-upper middle class areas. A couple individuals I know in both area are paying $45-$55 for 300/20 and up.

      @pmoncho Directly to HD

This is fine for a lab but do not do this for production. It could make upgrading/reloading much more difficult later.

For VMware, I would use USB or SD cards if possible. ESXI is only like 500 MB's and that is it. You can store the ESXi logs on normal storage. There are numerous sites out there with instructions.

Finally done dealing with setting up new cable modem, cable box and bringing down the TV from upstairs.

Lightning struck a tree in the neighbors yard that touched the cable line, sending high voltage taking out the cable modem, shorting out the HDMI output in the cable box and eventually "frying" the TV.

      Ugh what a night.

      @G-I-Jones

You can use these instructions or others you find on google.
      https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2042141

So, if the USB dies, you reload the same version of ESXi onto new USB key, keeping the storage drive in tact, set IP address and then restore the config and reboot. Boom! all done. It is that easy as I had to do it once.

I recommend backing up the config every time you make a change. I never really delved into profiles either but from what I hear, you can save those in vCenter. Once you add the server back, reload the profile, reboot and you should be good to go.

ESXi is loaded all into memory after boot up. Other than USB disk checks, nothing is stored on the USB key after the hypervisor is loaded. It mostly writes to the USB key on reboot/shutdown.

If you use a USB/SD key, you will need to create a log folder on your storage volume to save all the log files. After install, set the ScratchConfig parameter with the correct path and reboot (It is easy so don't worry).
      https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1033696

If you want to really go nuts on DR. Backup the config while it is loading, take out the USB key, use Linux (I use clonezilla) and clone the USB key. Then put the key back in the server. You should be good.

      no, dont have that either.

Then you're going to have a difficult time keeping anything dry in that basement.... Sorry.

A sump pump will work to drain water that gets to it, but if the water is coming in from all corners and not being directed to a single point (a basin) then you'll likely have issues forever.

I've eliminated low points around the foundation and built them back up to drain away from the house. and moved the downspouts a little higher off the ground to allow more drop to the run off.
All things that I hope will keep water out..

Which is why every house in Ohio has a basin and sump pump. I've changed more pumps than I want to think about.

Been there/here and done that too. UGH! Last one has been doing good for the last three years.

@pmoncho We're ditching the H330. Boss just ordered the H730P.

That, in the long run, is probably the best call. Any way you can get the boss to add on the SD Card module? That will be a benefit also if you stay with ESXi.

haha, yes. Working on that as we speak.

Sweet. Keep going. See if your boss can get iDRAC enterprise license if you don't have that. Not really required but it is nice to have.

      Shrinkflation anyone?

      spoon.jpg

I mean, it's less waste at least.....

True but it is kinda flimsy. Good for oatmeal and soups so far. Haven't tried ice cream yet.

That's dangerous with any plasticware unless it's already half melted.

Had some good spoons for my wedding a few years ago. Those things help up against some hard ice cream and boiling water (cannot remember the brand). Whatever you do, DO NOT buy Amazon Basic plastic ware. They cannot handle the heat of soup. Felt like I was in The Matrix. "“Do not try and bend the spoon,...." I just tilted my head in amazement.

Good to know, most Amazon Basics items I've used have been great. My laptop/overnight Amazon Basics bag specifically is amazong.

Amazon Basic HDMI to DVI and DP to DVI cables have rocked and dirt cheap. Like you, I have had good luck with most of their stuff.

The H330 is like for labs or testing. Shouldn't be found in a production environment. It's a fine card for what it is, just not a production use card 🙂

Begs the question why when ordering a server for a specific purpose, they would even ship that out.

I have thought the same thing for a long time on Dell 4XX's on up. Either no controller at all or start at the H730 and up. Just an opinion though.
