What are your thoughts on Using LAPS to manage local admin account passwords on a domain?

      Use it. It's excellent.

Tie in DUO for 2FA on critical infrastructure like DCs and the backup server(s) and good to go.

On the various server VM's the customer wants a local admin account in addition to the domain admin account.

For security though should we disable the administrator account and create a different named local account with admin privileges instead?

Are we gaining a lot of security by doing this?

Thinking of using LAPS for these also.

      Yup. Use LAPS. It's excellent.

      Yeah, "Oh the humanity!".

The human person is not perfect.

The imperfect is not capable of building a perfect system.

      Therefore, nothing is perfect.

      Or something like that.

How often does that bubble need to get burst before folks take notice that there is nothing foolproof out there?

Actually, it was a gas station here in town. Several other folks I know had something similar happen over a few days, so let's just say I won't be going back there, lol.

Someone has a skimmer on the pump you used

Except it was the inside card machine in this case, not the pump.

I just stopped in for a snack, lol.

      Sounds like an inside job.

I... handn't thought about that. It very well could be.

Did you use the magnetic stripe on your card?

In this type of situation I only see the cashier as potentially being guilty if he was able to swipe the card without you seeing.

What at the changes he could attach a skimmer on an in store reader and you not notice? Unless they make them super tiny nowdays...

Krebs on Security had a series of articles on inside jobs IIRC.

There's plenty of inside jobs articles out there.

A micro-camera pointed at the PIN pad with the skimmer in the slot.

Manufacturers are getting better at protecting the slot, but no system is foolproof when someone can open the cover and plant the slider internally.

      But I ain't gonna pay $85K+ for a truck.

The used vehicle market up here is nuts right now. Any truck for sale doesn't get below 70% of retail unless it's a wreck.

Inflation is driven by the amount of fiat currency printed by a central bank.

It's actually in the banker's best interest, no pun intended, to keep printing that money.

It's why a $35K truck two decades ago is now $65K.

Real estate is somewhat resistant to this, but the catch is that the market bubble always busts bursts. Knowing the signs is key.

My Gram taught me a lot about real estate as she was a speculator's manager in Shanghai (Yeah, China before Mao).

We've done well since our first purchase in the middle 2000s before the bubble burst in '08.

The crazy amount of money being printed over the last year has wiped out any gains we had on our current property though the rush out of the city has helped to keep the price propped up.

      Know the signs. 😉

With the MSP revolution a number of years ago, a decade or more even?, we presented proposals to all of our clients. Since they are mostly accounting firms they didn't go for the full meal deal (OpEx versus CapEx) but did opt in for a blended approach.

Residual Income (Rich Dad, Poor Dad kind of stuff though I've never read the book(s) but had buddies around me into Silver Bullets preach to me) is the key.

It kept us going when I was incapacitated after an auto accident in 2016.

      So, start there.

I assume that's the same as passive income?

      Yes.

Residual Income is the same as Passive income.

Income that is not being actively produced.

EDIT: Another Example: Residual income would be the incoming fees from Tier 1 Cloud for all of the subscriptions we manage.

yeah, this is why I want to get into rental properties...

Sure I could try to save up a ton of money and live off the gains in the market.. but realestate seems safer in the long run.

Rental properties are a tough one. The neighbourhoods where our shop is has some really nice ones. But, to get into that tier one has to fork out some serious coin.

Inflationary signs. Slipping economy numbers. Plenty of markets have plateaued or even starting to slip price wise.

Out here, the rural properties are going for $10K an acre around us bare land. In the cities, a condo can be had for way below asking.

It's all in knowing where to put the money when it comes to real estate.

Nah, in my mind KISS applies here.
Add the drives, expand the array, and call it a day.

Might not be so simple. Not every perc controller / version can grow a RAID10 array.

I believe the entire array needs to be restriped when doing that.

Yeah, brain skipped after a speed bump. ;0)

Verify the current PERC can indeed expand that array and do so keeping things as they are.

You could copy out the contents of the SOBR, blow away the array, add the drives, set up the RAID 6 array, format, copy the data back, and finally get Veeam set up and the backups imported but that kills KISS big time.

Mention of "replacing the server" is there so keep the time cost ($150/Hour minimum here) in mind for any changes to be made relative to the budget for the new rig in the not to distant future.

@dustinb3403 Well I looked up Dell drives and the 3.84 SATA read-intensive drives are going for ~$1800 a piece (before any discounting).

Tier 1 hardware is a particular beast.

Yeah, we can scour the fleabays of the world for caddies, but then comes the firmware fun times and/or question marks.

Our saved search e-mail monitoring shows Tier 1 secondary channel sales as being very expensive even relative to buying direct from the Tier 1 vendor.

At this point, adding a couple of known good SAS spindles and calling it a day is probably going to be the safest bet without having to think about rebuilding that SOBR, or adding a new SOBR and migrating the backups, or just setting up an entirely new array/SOBR and backing up leaving things vulnerable for a while.

Nah, in my mind KISS applies here.

Add the drives, expand the array, and call it a day.

Oh, and make sure to set up a B2 bucket for some immutability. 😉

@beta said in RAID 6 in my backup VM host on spinning rust?:

Hear me out...I have a Dell server that I use as a Veeam replication target. This host is used as a backup in case my primary server dies - I just turn on the replicas and run from it until primary host is repaired.

This backup host currently has OBR10 comprised of 10 600GB 10K SAS drives. I'm running up against storage capacity limitations and have ordered 2 additional 600GB disks to add to the array, but I was thinking while I am in the process of rebuilding this array, maybe I should change it from OBR10 to RAID 6? My concern is that while I am pretty sure the OBR10 will give me enough space to last until I schedule a complete replacement of the server, the margin will be very slim whereas the RAID 6 I'm sure will give me plenty of extra breathing room until the server is replaced.

Would this be crazy to do? Or should I just stick to OBR10? Thanks!

Prior to implementing all-flash on SATA SSDs we'd run with eight to sixteen 10K SAS spindles in RAID 6.

Those arrays were running anywhere from four to ten virtual machines. There would be a DC, Exchange, Remote Desktop Services usually in farm mode, SQL, and a series of LoBs.

The largest RAID 6 rust array was sixteen spindles.

      350 IOPS x 8 = 2,800 or 5,600 for 16 spindles. Ugh, can you believe it? 😛
Mean throughput for 2.5" SAS drives was about 150MB/Second per drive for older less dense platters and about 250MB/Second for newer high areal density drives.

Since this is a replica server, the expectation would be that it would not be as performant as the main server so no real worries there.

Just so long as there isn't 100+ ms response times that is. That would become very painful very fast.

      What version of Veeam?

A SOBR set up with a cloud layer with BackBlaze B2 and immutability is a huge step ahead in protecting an org from an outright blotto event or malware.
