@Obsolesce I have also found through experience that more memory on a SQL server does not necessarily improve performance. This is also true with VCPUs. I would monitor closely and change one thing at a time. Just my 2 pennies worth

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
@LostDungeon Bad idea! Never imply that your girl is not beautiful via a gift. False eye lashes will prompt the question of "why" to which you must say "I want you to become more beautiful" - this will not go well.
Get her a trip to a beauty spa instead. Tell her you want to pamper her.

RE: Should ML start funding and supporting IT ideas and tech
@Emad-R So are you talking like something to help to ML community, like a ticketing system, or an inventory tracker? And ML users could help fund the project? Do you have something specific in mind?

RE: Miscellaneous Tech News
@dbeato I was being a bit sarcastic, although I have seen a windows 10 update "hang" for more than a day. That said, it has gotten better.

RE: Miscellaneous Tech News
@DustinB3403 I think the bigger issue that they cannot resolve is that you can do a full install of windows in about 40 minutes, but the updates take 4-40 hours. How can this even be conceivable? They could wipe out the OS and reinstall in less time then the updates.

RE: Printer suggestion
I'll be the 3rd and suggest Brother - Solid printers and low cost supplies

RE: Server license or VDI (or possibly desktop with Desktop Windows OS)?
@DustinB3403 You are correct - It what I meant when I said users. And yes, it would fall outside MS guidelines. On the other hand, MS is so FUBAR on it's licensing schema that it's really hard to say what is kosher and what is not when nitpicking these kind of details.

RE: Server license or VDI (or possibly desktop with Desktop Windows OS)?
Probably do not need a server license. Most of these type of apps can be run in Client/Server mode on a desktop so I think you would be fine. Bigger question is how many people are going to use the app? Just one? then a desktop or a VDI would be fine. If there is more than 5 accessing then I would move to a 3 tier with a VM using Windows Server.

RE: Non-IT News Thread
@DustinB3403 Thanks! And the video was an added pleasure. Even though I already know Schrodinger's cat theory, I had to watch for the amusement.

@DustinB3403 Explain to the uninformed please (namely me)

RE: Non-IT News Thread
@JaredBusch Oh they have the money for sure. I just wonder if the quality will be good enough for those that put needle to vinyl. Pretty finicky bunch IMHO

RE: Non-IT News Thread
@jmoore At $almost $300 US I'm not sure if it will take off - There are a lot of people with vinyl though so....

RE: Non-IT News Thread
@jmoore "The PS-LX310BT is priced at £200 and will be available from April 2019"

RE: Miscellaneous Tech News
@mlnews said in Miscellaneous Tech News:
Chromium on Fedora finally gets VAAPI support!
Chromium web browser available in Fedora gets a Video Acceleration API support.
Chromium with a VAAPI patch was already available on other distributions. But this was not the case with Fedora. I really want hardware acceleration. But my love for Femlnewsdora was holding me back. Then with sheer willpower, I joined Fedora and started maintaining a package in COPR.
Darn you mlnews trying to change the subject!

RE: Miscellaneous Tech News
I suppose they could come up with something like "Amazon Secure" which is a premium over Prime that includes the lock box. But would people pay for it??
-
RE: Miscellaneous Tech News
Sigh... Why aren't they just going with a lockbox on the porch? be done with it already.
According to Forbes, more than half of Americans have Amazon delivery. Figure in bulk, you can put a secure lock box on someone's porch (and what about apartments) for less than $50, which I doubt... with 126 million households in the US, that would be north of a $3 billion investment. Until they lose more than that in 2 years there is no way they'll do it.
