    • RE: Non .com TLDs

I think it depends on who you are catering your site/services to.

Generally, I feel .com is the gold standard for business and enterprise. For personal stuff, it doesn't matter. Like your site, eddiejennings.net, perfectly fine.

Maybe for younger people, one of the newer hundreds of weird TLDs seems like a good idea, but I still feel like .com and .net are the only ones I would ever consider. (except for country-specific TLDs like .se, .it, etc - those are fine if it makes sense)

    • How To: Install and configure SaltStack with GitLab

I'm starting a high-level how-to on setting up and configuring SaltStack to work with GitLab as a fileserver backend, and then graduating with LANless minion management and automation.

I did not create this first part (Part 1) as I was setting things up. I pieced it together through notes and memory, so there is a chance I missed some things. If I did, please let me know!

We should have a salt states file tag, strictly for salt states files. I'll populate it as I make them. I see you have a few on here that could be added.

Not to beat a dead horse but: This is the response I got when I informed them that I could not provide access Via FTP.

      Hi Jon,

Our lead developer said: "With respect, the GUI of Wordpress is not the ideal place to do all of a websites maintenance. And not all tools are compatible with the GUI, like our particular DB find and replace toolsets. In the event of some form of failure, FTP is also the first source accessed to rectify problems. Additionally, all developers tools such as Coda/Sublime/Dreamweaver/etc are void without such types of access.

For highly technical tasks like speed improvements on a website, for a site we do not host, I am not comfortable performing such maintenance without my full toolset available."

Please let us know if you will be able to provide the requested access.

Lol... Dreamweaver? Are they a bunch of 10-year olds?

Wtf would they use Dreamweaver for editing WP content?

Why do they need to worry about server and/or website availlability failure if they are only worrying about SEO?

I would never contact them again. Definitely a scam and definitely nobody I would want touching my websites.

ReaR is great as agent based backup for image based recovery and inceementals. For file based, I like FWBackups.

ReaR works great on stateless VMs, really easy and quick to recover.

Why are you backing up stateless machines?

      Policy and DR.

Don't need it for DR. Then the question becomes, why did someone make that policy?

They want every physical and virtual server backed up at least weekly.

If a stateless server goes down, I don't have time to rebuild it. I am also not at a place to fully implement Salt to redeploy every damn server we have... we have 100+ servers and most of them are all different. That's a lot of work.

Yes, in an ideal environment it wouldn't be like that. But it takes time to get there, and there aren't enough of us to do it now, and there are many higher priority things going on atm. But it's getting closer.

There's also the issue of me being "the man behind the curtain" like the Wizard of OZ. It was brought up that implementing so many different things like SS, NC, this, that, and the other thing isn't desirable because of the hit by the bus issue...

      So politics are another thing.

Anyways, ReaR works great for servers... I use it, and am glad I do. It's already proved itself!!

This is extremely foolish to not go to Server 2016, especially while 2012 R2 is set to lose MS support soon.

These three suck and just cause issues.

Ideally, they sound great and look great on paper, but in practice, they break and cause issues the more you use it and the more users use it.

      1. I prefer to use XFS instead of EXT4.
      2. LVM is what I always use for it's many benefits.
      3. Use custom partitioning, give / about 65 GB (or less if you want) and use the rest of the space for /DATA. Both XFS.
      4. Then do your OS install and set up KVM.

      Hi,

Do containers and management platform for containers, makes all the hard work of making the server resilient obsolete like RAID and backups, however we will assume that the DB are hosted outside of this scope like on Amazon services.

If you have a server running 500 containers, would it be easier for automation to spin up another 500 containers on new hardware (while dealing with whatever issues are caused by 500 containers being down) or easier to have RAID and simply swap a disk and continue on?

    • Cloud Career Planning

Posting this here for discussion - opinions, improvement, constructive criticism, etc.

I've been doing a lot of Cloud work lately along with API automation (Azure, AWS, ServiceNow). This type of work, along with a primary focus on Cloud Security, and skills in DevOps technologies (jenkins, terraform, packer, etc) is the direction I want to go. MDM via the Clouds is nice as well. Depending on how the CCSK goes, maybe even a main focus on Cloud Security career, with the other stuff as a skill/ability set.

The job market in the above aspect is growing and it pays very well in most locations. I feel I would enjoy spending a fair amount of time in this career, before moving to a focus in management, perhaps ending up at CIO level in the not-so-far-out future.

I put together a list of courses to to help get things moving along, where if I stick to it, should be able to complete within the next 4 months.

I will start with the Azure stuff, as that will have the most immediate benefits both personally and with my current job / role.

I'm going to stock up on Udemy courses as a "new student" for the discount of like $12 per course (except the $67 AWS course). I'm likely going to get these, and am wondering if you would alter this list in any way?:

      • AZ-103 (Microsoft Azure Administrator) - https://www.udemy.com/70533-azure/
      • AZ-300 (Azure Architect Technologies) - https://www.udemy.com/microsoft-az-300-azure-architect-technologies/
      • AZ-301 (Azure Architect Design) - https://www.udemy.com/microsoft-az-301-certification-azure-architect-design/
      • AZ-500 (Azure Security Engineer Associate) - https://www.udemy.com/a-to-z-of-azure-security-covers-az-500-and-more/
      • AWS Certified Solutions Architect - https://www.udemy.com/aws-certified-solutions-architect-associate-exam/
      • CCSK 1/2 - https://www.udemy.com/preparation-course-for-ccsk-v40-section12cloud-governance/
      • CCSK 2/2 - https://www.udemy.com/preparation-course-for-ccsk-v40-section22cloud-operations/
      • Infrastructure Automation With Terraform, Packer, Docker, ECS, EKS, Jenkins - https://www.udemy.com/learn-devops-infrastructure-automation-with-terraform/

So for those 7 courses, I'm looking at roughly $150. I think that's a good buy and since those courses are good for life and currently being updated according to reviews. It could be the best $150 I ever spent. Time availability for this stuff... we will make it happen.

What do you all think of that career path in regards to viability, market, etc.? What about the course list?

I'm thinking about careers such as Cloud Architect, Cloud Administrator, Cloud Security Architect, Cloud Engineer, Cloud Infrastructure... etc., pick your word.

EDIT: After all the feedback considered, I added the AZ-103 course to the pool, and will do the following in order:

      1. AZ-103 Microsoft Azure Administrator
      2. CCSK Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge
      • Job experience - Current Azure / AWS cloud and DevOps experience with prior experience.
      1. DevOps Course
      2. AWS & the deeper Azure courses/certs.

1- backup my vms and recreate raid on Hardware and just present one logical drive to ZFS.

Just an FYI: it's not a backup when it's the only data. If you back up your VMs, then delete the originals, you no longer have a backup. All you have then is original data with no backup! Proceed wisely.

    • RE: Need headphones

I thought it would be good to give an update on how the headphones are holding up to my usage and expectations.

Just a reminder, I got the Sennheiser PXC 550. They are over/around-ear Bluetooth noise-cancelling headphones.

So I've been using them almost daily now for the past almost 4 months, about 45-60 minutes each way to/from work on the train. I don't always use the noise cancelling on the train, but when I do, it shuts up what I am trying to avoid hearing pretty well. 🙂 I also use them at home for watching Udemy courses, at work, music for R&R at home, and sometimes for a video game. I usually use them wirelessly, but sometimes I hook them up to my computer's USB while listening when they need a charge. The charge still lasts well over 20+ hours. I don't time it, but it lasts weeks before needing a charge. Definitely 2+ weeks, depending on usage, which I mentioned above, give or take.

I found out a co-worker has had the same pair for years, and they also still look and work like new.

To wrap up, they are definitely holding up well, and surpassed my expectations. I definitely recommend!

I don't remember for sure but I think it's rdp sessions are disabled by default.

Yes, it's basically registry keys, so whatever method you can use to remotely change registry keys will work... powershell, device management software, via cmd, whatever.
