I'm seeing the same thing.

RE: My Own Worst Enemy...
To answer your question, he basically asked them if they talked to me about whether the decision made financial sense from a leasing contract perspective. We've decided to go without maintenance contracts in the past to save money. He mentioned that and how this can be a cheaper route. But once the other party spoke for me saying I was fine with it he was fine with it.

RE: My Own Worst Enemy...
Here's an added twist. They sent the leasing agreement to our CFO who then responded with...did you run this by IT first? They then responded that they had spoken with me via phone and thought I was good with everything.
I think it's time we set the record straight.

My Own Worst Enemy...
A ticket came in on Tuesday from a remote site about a new copier lease they were about to sign and that they needed someone on site to help with setup (a couple of weeks out). By the time I made a call to the site to get more information, the lease for the new copier had already been signed by someone there. I was told the monthly cost was the same, toner was covered, and so was maintenance. I did mention the fact that they were allotted only 300 black and white impressions before having to pay a per-impression overage fee (not cool).
To my discredit, I did not enforce the fact that we really would have appreciated being in the loop before the deal was done. I didn't take that moment to let them know this kind of thing needs additional input from those on the technical side of the house. I just made sure the copier would work with our servers, etc. We don't normally get cut out of the loop like this, so maybe I was a little taken aback by it.
Call it being busy, preoccupied, not thinking clearly, etc. But I missed my chance to really set things straight and let them know this could turn out to be a not-so-great decision in the long term. Now I think I have waited too long since this happened Tuesday afternoon to really do anything about it.
Do you ever have days like that where you really blow it?

You are right @Katie
The Minion Queen has spoken. You don't want to go against that.

This is a MangoLassi exclusive, and if I don't get a response I may have to post this information in another community out there.

RE: Rackspace CloudU - Have You Tried It?
Every now and then those e-mails you get randomly from your vendors have good stuff in them. And since I love Rackspace, I read it.

Rackspace CloudU - Have You Tried It?
I recently found that Rackspace has a FREE online cloud curriculum you can work through and obtain certification. I wish I had more time to do stuff like this, but I wanted to at least share so others can benefit:

RE: SpiceWorld 2014
I'd like to see some panel sessions that are specifically just Q and A. What if we took 4 of the top VMWare pros, for example, and just let people hammer them with questions?

RE: AetherStore
I think if they offered their product with some kind of backup to a cloud target it would be a little better. But I agree it is worth a shot for backup targets, etc.

Bundled Patch Cables for Cable Management
Has anyone used these kinds of cables? I stumbled upon them in a spread in CIO magazine the other day and thought I should get some to help clean up our telco and server rooms at some point.

vCenter Operations Manager - Do You Use It?
For those using VMWare, if you have vCenter, are you using vCenter Operations Manager?
I only have vSphere Essentials (3 hosts), and it would probably help us to some degree. I get that we don't have access to all the bells and whistles that other VMWare versions paired with Operations Manager may bring, but what I really wonder is how much more helpful Operations Manager would be than just vCenter by itself.
I'd love to hear any feedback you can give me.

RE: So My DroboCare Expired...

I'm not sure how I let this happen, but with a call to Drobo tech support yesterday, I found out the Drobocare on our B800i that we use as a Veeam backup target expired several months ago. We have had the unit for 2-3 years, but the price to renew when out of warranty is over $1K for one year. Ouch.
So, is it really worth it to renew? If the device itself fails it looks like I can get another for just over $1K. The problem would be that it happens to be our only storage device at command central outside of the ESXi hosts' local storage.
What would you do?
beg and plead with drobo for a renewal rate and not a re-up rate
So in other words...please take $800 off this price! I'm sure that will go over well.

RE: Favorite SMB Switches
I'd actually be curious to try a D-Link managed switch. They had a booth at a certain IT conference last year in Austin and were evangelizing to folks about their new line of gear.
