Why not back up through normal MS SQL means and restore using its own tools?
This will probably be our best avenue.
@dustinb3403 said in Migrate database from Hyper-V to VMware:
I'm guessing he is wanting to migrate the entire VM rather than just the database, hence the question.
But I'd agree using the MS SQL backup and restore approach would likely be best.
The next option down from that would be to export the VM and import it into VMWare, but you'll likely need to convert the disks to whatever VMWare supports.
We're actually going to build new 2016 servers. So, we're just going to migrate the data.
The biggest problem of all of this is going to be finding the downtime to migrate all of the data from the old system to the new system. We're looking at 1 TB of data including the database and all of the transaction logs.
Can't you sync the databases?
Something else to look into. I've considered replicating all of the data over from old to new and then, over a weekend, failing over to the new and reversing the replication.

I had a long night yesterday.... so it might take a while to wake uplol fair enough. It's likely the case that just most on here are night owls.
Careful.... the owls are not what they seem.
Neither are the concrete angels. Don't blink

This is the script I am using. It works fairly well.
Oh my gosh, that script is HUGE. I'm not a software developer, but I'll see if I can read through it and put it to practice.
Thanks,

RE: Mapping OneDrive Business to a drive letter
With the wonderful help of @JackCPickup, we were able to use the script previously mentioned that I thought broke. One of my coworkers has been able to confirm that it works for them as well, as is. Perfect!
Now, next task is to automate the execution of the script when the user logs in.

Learning how to do things against best practice @Dashrender is not the best thing for the client or the person installing it. If the person installing it, can't support he shouldn't be installing it!
Go and learn in a lab if that is the case.
how hard is it to install hyper-v, give it a computer name and an IP address? Then just go back to the computer, run the Hyper-V Manager to connect to it remotely, and you're off.

RE: Mapping OneDrive Business to a drive letter
These are all just webDAV pointers without synchronizing OneDrive to all of the computers.
You are correct. We couldn't afford the storage that it would take for us to sync up everybody's OneDrive profiles across all of our servers, plus the backups that it would cost us. Dedup would help, but wouldn't be enough.

You could also substitute the Atlanta sunday paper for yellow pages. Their litter started showing up in my driveway a few weeks back... but I'm glad to have news print paper to light my charcoal grill.
Ugh. My local paper introduced a "free" Monday edition. The paper kid throws it on the porch every Monday morning. If were not there or don't notice it the wind picks it up and spreads it across our lawn. There was a reason I didn't sign up for your paper in the first place why would I want a free copy?
If you're quick enough, catch it and throw it back at him!
Or throw rocks at the little shite.
Upstate NY is like Texas you never know who is armed.
So then I should just shoot the little fuckers?
Only if you catch them in your house, with a weapon. . .
Wrong answer. If I got up early enough on Sundays to see these litter tossing fuckers, I would have already beaten one or two of them to a pulp with my fish bat. Because DON'T LITTER IN MY FUCKING DRIVEWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Probably only take 1 cracked cranium to get my address off the list.
How about Lucille?

RE: Unitrends Free is still useless
@taurex said in Unitrends Free is still useless:
Btw, is there anything agentless and free for Hyper-V or vSphere that can be used for scheduled VM backup? I had hopes for the free Unitrends but now they're shattered after this post.
Edit: Looks like the Unitrends' free offering for VMware is better but it's a topic for a different thread I guess:)
Which part do you want free? ESXi/vSphere slash Hyper-V or Veeam?
VBR does offer a free edition, but does not include scheduling capabilities. You can get around that with PS scrips invoking the jobs and Task Scheduler. However, if it breaks, then you get "Best Effort" support.
VMware ESXi/vSphere - No, because the API's will not be enabled for something like Veeam to interact with it..
Hyper-V - If you download the free Microsoft Hyper-V 2016 hypervisor (not a full blown 2016 server and add the Hyper-V role), then it is too free, but can be a pain to manage sometimes, but does allow for you to have VBR interact with it for free. Only downside for it with VBR is that you don't get all of the features that you could get with ESXi/vSphere.

If you're going to get mexican/Tex-Mex, then you might as well come to the south where about every mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant is more than likely owned by a Mexican.

I don't have any smart devices yet, but hope to change that over the next year or so. I could use it at work for lights and maybe some SNMP stuff with servers.

RE: Hurricane Harvey
@scottalanmiller, @Dominica, @Texkonc, @NetworkNerd, and I are far enough inland that we won't get any thing more than a scattered shower or thunderstorm from one of the arm bands of Harvey.
@brianlittlejohn will expect to see more rain as he is more in the Waco area. Scott mentioned that @StorageNinja is down in that area, but I am not sure of his status.
There is an ARES crew local to me that is probably geared up and ready to go the minute that Harvey begins to evacuate. I'm keeping my radio close by and on NOAA along with the local 2m repeater, just in case. I'm not apart of the ARES team, but just like to stay prepared.

@nerdydad That's not for the user. That's for the admin who then delivers that via whatever management solution they use.
Quick Access/Favorites can be Group Policy managed so all or some domain members can get it easily.
For external users it's a two step process to send them a shortcut and they know how to log on from there.
There are 4 RDP servers, brokered together for our ERP system, along with all of the off-chutes that some users will have with some other servers for whatever reason, plus their desktop, for 130 users.
I find the most difficult part of managing an RDP farm is getting the apps themselves to play nicely. I've only had a couple of apps that just flat out refused to work correctly.
Since this is all virtualized, I'll just take one server, sysprep it, shut it down, and then just clone it. Apps are all the exact same. The only thing that needs to change are the UUID's and the database.

RE: Hurricane Harvey
@gjacobse My dad (an extra) told me one time that he was able to pull the grayscale cloud images from the satellite, but I didn't have a chance to figure out how he did it. I'm sure its probably just a radio on a frequency with a slow scan TV.

RE: O365 question
Why are you paying every 4 years? Why not turn this into an operations expense and renew either monthly or annually? Not sure on education levels but Pro Plus levels and up gets Office 2016 as apart of the licensing.

@nerdydad said in Office 365 Manual Configuration:
Even though O365 will work with Outlook 2010 with some help, you still want to strongly consider upgrading all of your desktops to Office 2016. Eventually, Exchange Online will drop support for Outlook 2010 and 2013.
Typically, your Exchange Online address will be <tenant>.mail.protection.outlook.comI know, but it's a budget problem, while Office 2010 works with Exchange 365 and they don't let me upgrade the version.
ProPremium and up has Office 2016 built into the subscription price of O365. This isn't a budget problem, this is a management problem. Management being scared of change.
