RE: What Are You Watching Now
watching the latest samit video on the apple m1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdMGpH1-ZoI
@scottalanmiller can you share the model of the table stand light you have behind you? Additionally, I found all those sounds during the cutaways to be very very distracting and almost painful to listen to so many times.

RE: POE Switch for IP Surveillance Camera
First check the IP cameras specs for PoE specifics, especially if you use Unifi ones. Their cheaper cameras are 24V Passive PoE and won't work with cisco switches and require a Passive to 802.3af Adapter. I spent about 2hrs trying figure out why the camera wasn't powering on from my 2960X switch.

RE: POE Switch for IP Surveillance Camera
The Unifi micro is nice. I've just put one up today in a shared server room we have to keep an eye on our racks. Going to put in a 2nd (maybe 3rd around back) as we have a bit to either side of these and need to see them all. Magnet/screw/stick mount is very versatile. These are wifi only though.

RE: ML Stats?
@scottalanmiller no search traffic. Algorithm from their Alexa users. Think those damn toolbars that get installed when you install something else. https://support.alexa.com/hc/en-us/articles/200449744-How-are-Alexa-s-traffic-rankings-determined-

Mac OSX for XenServer
Does anyone happen to have a link to download a working base disk image of OSX I can run on XenServer?

How are you using SMR based drives?
I'm wondering how others are using SMR based drives. Clearly there are situations where their performance is acceptable. Also, use within any RAID setup seems to not be recommended and it's unlikely many are creating custom implementations of Reed-Solomon erasure encoding. How can these best be used in multi-drive setups for example?

RE: Managing disk space on a VM host
@scottalanmiller
Maybe I didn't explain it correctly or I'm not sure what you mean...From what I understood in order to resize a volume you need to shutdown the host: http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX120865
Not what I want to do.On the Rackspace server, I just add each 1tb volume (1tb is max storage you can add at a time) to the host as needed and then add that live into the volume group for the video storage. the application isn't away of any changes and continues to write to that same space. This is all that I did...

I ended up re-installing xenserver and the updates worked this time around.

Saving a dying server
Let me just preface that this was inherited and steps are being taken now to move to a more reliable system setup. Need to work on resolution rather than what someone should have done before. (backups, monitoring, etc.)
Single drive, dedicated remote host @ Fasthosts, with a failing drive with no backups. Drive is using lvm.
What is the best way to try and salvage the data to move it on another server.?
I will update in a sec with more details on the setup.

RE: Saving a dying server
they are trying to run the backup with all the services still running - it's a billing/invoicing server and statements are going out and being processed today. I've said we should turn off services to run the backup and migration

RE: Saving a dying server
@johnhooks that's nothing - it was twice that yesterday

@BRRABill said:
OK, next question.
How do I get a file onto my XenServer? Say I wanted to copy something over to it?
2 commands you could use to copy a file over to your xenserver box
# wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1234567/file.txt # scp [email protected]:/location/on-remote-server/file.txt /xenserver/path/

RE: Order Management System - OMS
@DustinB3403 I've generally just used our suppliers user and approval workflow system for this. Insight, Softcat, CDW all have built in OMS functionality.
If you're not using vendors that have this built in the look at using a simple Google Apps script: http://googleappsdeveloper.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/approval-workflow-using-apps-script.html?m=1
Or for something prebuilt: https://kissflow.com/butterfly_effect/travel-request-approval-workflow-forms-admin-google-apps/ -

RE: Home Network Firewall Options
@wirestyle22 I've managed to kit out my home network entirly with Meraki gear I've acquired through webinars and cheap eBay sales. Currently using an MX60 which I picked up for £40 that included a little less than 1yr of the Advanced Security license on it.
