I want to hear your stories of vLAN. Where should I start with it? I just learned that our firewall switch (Watchguard) support vLAN, but I am not sure where to even start with numbering or setting. Any thoughts? When would vLAN comes in handy? etc

This questions has been asked over and over again in various forums. But I could not find The Fix, only work around. We have our Network drive mapped via GPO. Previously, our network drives were mapped via login batch script. It was hideous. The GPO mapped drive looks much more cleaner, but recently we encounter some PC will have Red X on their network drives... but they all are still accessible. What gives? DNS? :S
So I found this link to Microsoft fix for auto disconnect. Is it related to the red X ?

It's a hit or miss for me. Right now even after clicking it, it still mark RED X, but accessible. It is annoying to some users. Others they just don't care as long as no error pop up.
I do not think it will work for DIY. I have done a Click of Death fix before, but it was due to failed headers.
For starter, I would call couple of drive saver companies throughout the states (assuming you live in U.S.). some may only cost you couple hundreds to a thousand.
If not, I would buy 3 identical drives as to the failed one. The PN, model, year, etc need to be exactly the same for best result. Save a file onto one of the new drive. Do a test platter swap with the test drive on one of the remaining 2 drives (save 1 for your failed drive).
You will also need something like blow pic with some modification. Although it is not required, but you still need a very clean environment. Remember to wear a mask, goggle, and some thing to cover your hair. Dust on a platter is your worst nightmare. You will need to dust very frequently as well.
Add 2 holes and attach them to a vacuum. Use duster or any high pressure air gun to get rid of as much dust as possible.

We are running out of ip addresses for subnet .1.xx. I know DHCP is capable of performing super cope, or combine subnets. But I think I need to increase subnet mask as well to accommodate the increase IP address range.
What is the pros/cons for going /23 subnet? Should I go even lower?
I have 80 devices (printers, phones, server) that is on statics. The rest are DHCP. Should I eleminate statics all together and use DHCP reservation instead?
If /23 will double the available range, then /22 should quadruple it right? would you recommend going /22 for future proofing?
Is there a way to secure the free Windows 10 upgrade while still on Windows 7? We do not have volume licensing.

Our recent purchase with Dell (using coupons) is $450 for Optiplex 3020 i5-4590 + After market Samsung 850 Evo 250GB ($50) + additional 8GB memory stick (12GB total) ($30). I did a lot of shopping research and Newegg just happen to have samsung 850 on their daily eggshocker thing. Don't expect to get this price at this moment. Might be around $650

Small SSD? You can get after market 512gb for around $100
Why spend $100 when $60 will do for a 120 or even 256? By company policy, no one is suppose to have any data on the local machine. My new Windows 10 images take around 25 GB, anything more than that is just a waste of space and money.
True that no one should have anything on their local, but some LOVE to put stuff on their Desktop. I overcome this with VeeAM backup on to their secondary hard drive. We don't have folder relocation policy yet.
The application was published by GPO. I just ran update patch from Adobe on the MSI package and made some changes to the MST (config modify) file. I am not sure if doing so break the application or not... but now I cannot update the application on workstations nor uninstall it.
Any idea? How to fix the Transform? If unfixable what's my next step.

How to deny an extension (Google Hangout) via GPO? We already have GPO template installed, and it is now pushing some Extensions to certain OU. One of the manager request to restrict Google Hangout from all Chrome browser.
Under Chrome template > Users > Policies > Admin template > Google > Google Chrome (Enterprise) > Extension > Configure Extension installation blacklist... I already enable nckgahadagoaajjgafhacjanaoiihapd;https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx but it still enabled.
I use ID;https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx to push extension so I am under the impression it also works for deny as well.

All we know is that GPO for crytolocker was broken/denied thus any protection for CryptoLocker was disabled for at most 48 hours. It was a combination of incidents lead to CryptoLocker. Don't think flash is the cause here.
We are looking for a mic system for our conference room. We use the room for meeting, training, and company wide (50 people) event. Right now I use a regular headset with mic + a laptop with "Listen to this device" and out into Bose speaker. It works but the sound quality is sloppy and it pick up a lot of breathing and friction sound.
My boss wants a better system in place. He wants 3 wireless mics where 2 of them is a concealed kind (The kind that snap on the shirt...not the handheld).
