I just want to troubleshoot this issue

Well your version is part of troubleshooting the issue. Your OS lacks the support that you want (support meaning it lacks support for PHP7 with LDAP.) That's part of the issue. It's not an aside.

Does ownCloud9 actually REQUIRE PHP 7?

My install updated without any headaches, but that is because I already had PHP-7 installed.

no no, not at all, I just gave that as example on MY system. It requires PHP 5.4+ 😉

So installing php5-ldap or php-ldap should do the trick...

@scottalanmiller does the VHDX have any benefits over the other formats? It seems it didn't built and I'm wondering if we should put in effort fixing that or remove it from the download page...

SAML is supported in the Enterprise Edition - so that part would work. Besides that, I don't know if there is specifically Azure AD Integration...

That's sad that the big enterprise AD integration is included in the free version but the SMB Azure AD federation is limited to the enterprise versions 😞

well, as I said, not sure if Azure works - I do know that SAML is, in general, a huge-business thing, not a SMB thing... Didn't know Azure uses it, that's odd as it forces SMB to take on quite some costs.

you probably miss some PHP plug which allows LDAP. "php7-ldap" it is called on my openSUSE system.

Yeah, we keep hardening oC so you get more and more warnings... But you also get a more and more secure system if you do what they suggest 😉

The docu should be up, if you bump in missing links, pls let me know!

Those warnings are silly in 8.2. Things like saying that I have no internet access

Edit: here is what my 8.2 panel shows on a fully updated CentOS7 install.

      0_1457465081332_upload-0bc32892-b91f-44e2-a649-04be7208baaf

The 'no internet' error, just like many others, does come only when there IS a problem - so are the other warnings 😉

I strongly suggest to take the security issues very serious, and no memory cache (performance) and PHP version (performance AND security) are also very useful warnings.

Isn't it better to know about these problems than not?

using letsencrypt right now on my home server, btw. Have a cron job set up to update the cert every month or so, with an easy tool: ACME. Simpler than the 'standard' tool from Lets Encrypt, if you ask me. Go check it out at https://github.com/hlandau/acme 😉

    • Awesome: ownCloud has over 8 million users and more updates ;-)

We've got a blog on owncloud.org about how ownCloud has grown to 8 million users. I've updated owncloud.org/history with new statistics, too, see the top of the page. Exciting, right? If you're curious about the origin of the numbers, I gave some hints in the blog but let me just say that it helps that we know of some HUGE deployments in India and Brazil, over a million each and more of such government related deployments are in the works. Of course, home user growth and use at providers has also been impressive and ownCloud, Inc. has served over 300 customers now, that isn't insignificant either.

I had a blast last weekend at SCALE and am looking forward to FOSDEM this weekend, if you're there, come say hi! Will blog about SCALE and ownCloud later.

      More ownCloud updates:

      • we're working on improving the upgrade process
      • We're also overhauling activities and notifications
      • ownCloud mail is making progress

And I personally created some fuzz when I told people not to use distribution-provided ownCloud packages.

A earlier blog about WHY to upgrade and subsequent blogs about how to upgrade were less controversial 😉

I also have tips on how to get started with ownCloud app development, the quick and dirty way and how to patch ownCloud easily and quickly with features and fixes from github.

Shoot if you have comments or questions!

not at all, it will refuse to run as we removed a bunch of old code abstracting the file system away to make it all work on Windows. This code was unmaintained, slow and buggy but without it data loss is immediate (rather than just 'likely, at some point').

    • ownCloud updates & app approval process

      Hi awesominals,

We've published our last updates for the year just before christmas and if you've got your ownCloud server, it is time to update. We only publish CVE's 2 weeks after availability of updates but I can already tell you that there are good reasons to upgrade, though nothing groundbreaking.

If you are still on 8.0 or older, I'm going to publish a blog early in the new year about why you should upgrade, but trust me: stay on the latest or latest-1, further back really offers few benefits other than "if it works, don't break it". Now that last IS a good, valid reason to keep things but if you do run in problems: upgrade before spending too much time on fixing the problem is the smart thing to do.

In different news, we've got a new app approval process. Your feedback is very welcome, we'd like to hear from app developers if this is an improvement for them.

btw, if you want to be kept up to date on ownCloud news, we've got a newsletter.

Have a great new years' party 😉

    • RE: InfoWorld on Everyday Encryption

      @scottalanmiller

In the hereditary world, it takes zero mental capacity to be a world leader. Dead people have even pulled it off. In the democratic world, being smart almost certainly bars you from office as the average person is put off by smart people. Democracies naturally promote the worst, not the best.

I don't really agree with that. I think that, for office, you have to have some smarts. It's problematic to come off as intellectual, yes, that is certainly true. But actual stupidity doesn't pay. I think it pays to be good at looking stupid while playing 'the game' very well.

Not saying that office attracts the SMARTEST people, though, nor the kindest or best. And about the puppets, Frank Herbert said: Power does not corrupt, but power attracts the corruptible. If he is right, we should elect people for office who aren't interested 😉

    • RE: LibreOffice Online

So yesterday we announced that we're working with Collabora on this. They were already working on this (sssht, secret) and when the cat went out of the bag, as linked by the topic poster, they hired the guys who did the work on that one to keep them from ruining the fun 😉

Some time next year (not before summer!), there'll be a product based on this. Awesome features like collaborative editing are coming, too, this wasn't really meant to be advertised before January (FOSDEM!) but, well, the students-who-are-now-hired started the fire early.

    • RE: How Big Will the Impact of Lets Encrypt Be?

A big benefit of Letsencrypt is the automation. The automation on a server box was already mentioned, but it goes further than that: you can create a VM or a liveCD or a docker container etc to distribute your server application and use Letsencrypt. Unlike today, you won't have to use a self-signed certificate or let the receiver of the VM add one by hand, you can generate one with Letsencrypt on the fly! That is a game changer for ISV's who want to simplify deployment for small business customers, really.

We intend to use it in our official ownCloud VM's (for home users and SMB) and it is also super interesting for our collaboration with Western Digital on creating a self hosting device based on a Raspberry Pi 2. And I'm looking forward to getting it on my server - right now, openSUSE isn't supported, I hope they take care of that soon.
