In the states, can new employers see what you made in previous jobs?

RE: How would you counter offer a job proposal
I have been desperate once, but employed. Took a hefty pay cut to get out of a crap situation. Once able to take my time, secured a job with a 20-30% increase on the original pay. Basically, only take a low ball when you need to otherwise make them pay what you are worth.

Sorry to hear we are unable to meet agreeable terms. Thank you for your time and all the best in your search.

RE: How would you counter offer a job proposal
For real, if 55k is similar to what you make now, and the benefits are the same, but the drive is 4x longer, and you don't need to move jobs... Pass. Nope. Not for you. Working g for an MSP sucks imo.
"Dear xyz,
Thank you for the offer of 55k. I appreciate your offer but must decline. I am comfortable in my current role; to entice me to leave a comfortable job with a far longer commute I would need a fair increase in wages and benefits. I'd reconsider for 65k and 10% bonus, private healthcare and life insurance, and x days leave per year.I'd be very excited to work with you but the finances must be financially viable. Sadly, 55k does not meet that requirement for me.
If you can reconsider I'd look forward to agreeing a contract. Otherwise I wish you luck in your search."
Boom.

RE: Argh! Windows 10 Updates...
So, are you saying that if I am on 1607 now, that will get updated until 1703. If I don't update to 1703, I wont get any updates at all like patches or security releases?
I'd happily decline the large released (1511 -> 1607 -> 1703) if I can still apply the smaller patches like security...

Argh! Windows 10 Updates...
Folks,
Is it just me who is starting to really hate Windows 10? We have WSUS setup, tested the anniversary update on a few PCs, all looked good. (Some things like people pinned items move/change, but only small things)... Thus, approved the update.
A developer has updated his PC as the 'Install' notification popped up and the machine is now very much screwed up. IIS feature, off. ALL pinned items - gone.
usernames for applications he runs, reset to default like never used - a total mess. I'm in the progress of restoring to yesterdays endpoint backup for him now as he does not know where he kept his 'iis stuff'. BAH!So, how crazy would I be to decline all future Windows 10 feature/annual updates in WSUS entirely? Just allow security updates...
[just peeved/venting]
Thanks,

RE: CP - Dell vs HP server quotes
So, pointed out that a physical SAN is likely not the solution needed and to look at other options such as vSAN, and to be really sure if he still wants a SAN thay physical is the way to go - as it's likely not.
I expect vendors have stepped in. Said you need a SAN, and the OP is set. By highlighting and having him question it I was hoping to help the OP reason that a physical is the wrong direction...
But, as he specifically asked 'which SAN is better', the posts were removed as it's... Not helping towards answering the question of which SAN is better. Very limiting as neither are better for the use case and more the wrong questions was asked IMO.
Anyhow, I used to be very active years ago then took a job with an MSP for a year. In that time, it was hard to be active and I sort of died out on the forums. In the last year I am back with a SMB so have more time to be active again... In my year out I can see the SW community really has changed a lot in the wrong direction. To have posts removed as they are not answering directly enough, when answering cam help convince the OP to do something wrong, is bad.

RE: IT support Specialist
When its part time, you will still be here all the time!

RE: IT support Specialist
Wow. Poor. Feel sorry for anybody applying.
"I want a performer! Not someone watching the clock!" - that says it all. Bad first impression!^ it goes with saying they no doubt want somebody to work above their normal hours too all the time, be always contactable, never take holiday and be willing to only be paid peanuts.

RE: So we are leaving..............
You can find more online rather than me typing it all out, but one thing that really made me angry as an example is this (from a while ago, but still):
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-29754168
^ £1.7 Billion Bill in 2014 from the EU. Most other countries got payment to them, including Germany who have a better economy. Cameron said he wouldn't pay, but, oh look - he paid:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3237073/Cameron-Osborne-quietly-pay-1-7BILLION-bill-Brussels-dismisses-totally-unacceptable.htmlQuite how Greece, who were totally up **** creek got a £70m bill to pay, I don't know. Sure EU, it makes sense to hit a country that is totally screwed already with a bill. That makes LOADS of sense. Italy too that are in trouble were billed £268m. Its like we were fined for doing well and had to help the rest! Do better yourself rather than us. This time we cant help you as we are gone soon.
Just do your own research about the different issues.

You know, I know so little about this. I think I'm going to read up on it. I didn't really understand why there was a EU to begin with and my uneducated point of view had me a bit worried about it.
Because they didn't want there to be a reason to have anymore massive wars. They wanted peace and unity. Since the EU was formed, there has been 0 conflict between any of the member states...the longest period of peace in the region for hundreds of years or longer... It has so many positives to its member states, the European Convention of Human Rights and the open market agreement, freedom of movement and many more
OK, so before I form any opinions, why would Britain leave? They don't strike me as war mongers. LOL
Because the EU was destroying this nation.

Was supposed to quote:
"The EU will do whatever it takes to punish the UK. They can't allow a successful Brexit or other nations will follow"

Not shocked at all, I've predicted this since the referendum was called. From the US side, it looks firmly like the UK was looking to Trump and following the US election and using that propaganda at home. Trump certainly can be president and I honestly think is likely to be.
If you look at the reasoning for the exit, it sounds like Trump wrote it.
If they do not help make it a success, they will lose out on the money from the UK and will be unable to support the EU. Either way, sounds like EU has some difficult times ahead too.

RE: So we are leaving..............
@NattNatt said in So we are leaving..............:
My point of view: I'm scared.
Yes, no-one knows what will happen, but to be left without any legal support from Brussels on the important issues? That's scary. No forced adaption of the European Convention for Human Rights? Nothing stopping the tories from selling off the NHS/Privatising it/Charging for its use (as many of the main Leave campaigners have openly said/supported)? And that's ignoring the fact the majority of NHS workers are foreign.
It's the Tories that have devastated our NHS through constant cuts, not the EU. The Tories that are getting rid of the NHS-Training bursaries. The Tories that have slashed funding to ALL the emergency services in recent years, the Tories that have overseen the largest closure of cottage hospitals... And now there is nothing stopping them from continuing along that vein.
Markets are more than a bit unstable...I've lost 30% of my pension overnight. Our currency is at the lowest point in ALL the time I've been alive. A campaign of fear and false facts won over reason in my eyes.
All very valid points. I hope when we make our own rules we make them fair and work for the people. That is a risk. A huge one, but its worth a shot as being rules by a different entity removes our control.
Investors have seen what was happening with the vote and have moved money around to try to make a profit from the vote. After then initial shock it will all come back (I hope ha). Give it time...

The market is having an initial shock due to UK actually leaving. In the long run we will do better than fine.
No way in hell will the Middle East want to see the UK economy (and property) crash, as they would lose hundreds of billions. No way will German car manufacturers want to lose the 20%-30% sales from the UK, the French car manufacturers too. Supermarkets such as ALDI and LIDL are heavily invested in the UK and would want to keep that income coming in. Others too.
Large companies will force the EU to keep trade with the UK, as without trading with the 5th largest economy the EU will not have the funds to survive and bale out Greece, Italy so on so forth. Without the UK 'footing the bill', they probably wont be able to anyway.
*6th Largest. France overtook us this morning...
Haha, but i'm sure you get my point. Lets see how well they are doing when they have to support Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, Macedonia and Turkey on top of bailing out Greece whilst trying to manage a messed up Spain and Italy. Germany and France are screwed if they do not keep working with the UK.
Markets are just a bit unstable as they didn't actually expect the leave vote to win. It will come back when places in the EU realise how much they will lose by 'shunning' investment with the UK.

RE: So we are leaving..............
I'm not worried. This is a good thing. We need to be strong though to the rest of the world - Cameron resigning makes us look weak. It also adds political worries to economic worries which exacerbates the financial issue we are seeing. He should not have resigned and should have said something strong and confident about the UK economy instead.

RE: How do you get your boss to notice your work?
Agree and disagree. You don't have to worry about proving yourself to your boss/management.
When you are trusted to do a great job with little interaction, whenever something really good is done it is useful to show your manager. This is because face time is good when you don't week to week hae to interact much and and communication is always a good thing.
I'd rather spend some time communicating the good stuff that is done, even though trusted to just get on with it, rather than no communication until the off chance that something bad has happened...
-
RE: How do you get your boss to notice your work?
When something good is completed I say: "Hey boss, xyz is done, it's real cool. I need to show it to you so you can see how it roughly works so that if I am hit by a bus you have a rough idea. I will of course document it all properly but I will give you a quick run over it..."
When you meet up you can show how good you have done.

RE: Spiceworks let go 12% of their workforce today
It is such a shame. I do feel bad for those who are gone and only hope they can find something better. 12% is not small.
I think they recently removed the job board section (not that I used it), perhaps it would have been better to leave such a section up to help those people to find new jobs before removal. Probably wouldn't have helped them, but it is less cruel that way.Remove job page, sack people < Sack people, help them use the page to find job (possibly), remove job page.
